... While I do think there is some sort of possiblity of a Civil War, I think it's very slim. I think a depression is a much, much more likely senerio. ...

With current population densities, a depression will probably have about the same fatality rate as civil war, maybe even higher.

I think this guy is on crack. While I do think there is some sort of possiblity of a Civil War, I think it's very slim. I think a depression is a much, much more likely senerio. I also don't see this country falling under the influence of any other country. I think at the worst we'd become isolationist.

Not really a bad thing....is it? I mean, we need to look at ourselves a little more at this point and time and let the rest of the world figure there own ****t out for awhile, that's what the UN and European Union etc are out there for.

Thinning of the heard, the strongest will survive.

Well, not necessarily the strongest in the way ya might first think of it...and not necessarily those best able to protect themselves and theirs either, at least after a certain point, anyway.

If enough social disintegration should occur, you get the biblical "pestilence" stuff too. The "strongest" might turn out to be those who have best natural immune resistence to whatever nasties are most prevalent. The Black Death only killed about half of those infected, but not necessarily the "weakest".

On yet another of my cheery notes, here's wishing for the best in '09!!

I agree with that, some things even the strongest physically can't overcome, like disease, their body might not handle it well. Some might be strong mentally and do better than the physical guy too. If you have some strenght mentally and physically with a little luck internally, hopefully you will make it. There are people out there that are weak in mind, they are weak physicallyi, they don't have a clue on how to do things for themselves, they will wait until someone comes to get them, feed them, cloth them or rescue them. This is not directed toward the poor either, this is rich, middle, and poor. Many of those in their 6000 square foot homes in the best neighborhoods wouldn't know how to survive without power let alone a complete collapse of society. If the true S does HTF and there is no government or agency to rescue them, many of them will go first.

THis is why I am liking the survival topics, good stuff, a lot to think about.

That's why I subscribe to George Carlin's theories of hygiene. :D

WARNING: If you don't already know this... don't watch this at work, or around your grandmother. It's Carlin, for God's sake.

I read something like what this guy is predicting years age in a magazine called the Furturist. Then Quebec was going to break away from Canada. The northwest of the US would join the Western Providences of Canada. The Southwest of the US would form a country that included the Northern part of Mexico with LA as the capital. Most of the old Confederacy would be a country. This of course hasn't happen yet either.

Close, but the eastern part of Canada and the Northeast US was a country. The reason Canada split was because Quebec wants independence.

I wish America would become more isolationist. Obama is going to lead us even further down the road of socialism.

The only thing I see in the article I agree with is that the US will cease to be the global financial regulator. Our debt load is simply becoming too high, the dollar continues to be weak, and too many other countries own vital interests in the US. I think it is very plausible that the EURO could supplant the US dollar as the world currency. Or very possibly China could end up assuming this role some point down the road. We are practically handing out all of our wealth to them and other countries like India by the way we have farmed out most of our manufacturing thanks to NAFDA.
