HK INSTIGATOR BY BENCHMADE

Recommended Posts

I've never really been big into knives, but something's clicked within the last few weeks and I've been trying to do a little reading. I carry a Kershaw Shuffle that a friend got me for Christmas last year, and I'm looking to upgrade to another folder from there, but I've been reading some about EDC fixed blades and ran across the HK Instigator. It doesn't seem too large, and looks to be pretty easily concealable, plus it's very affordable at ~$40. I was just wondering if anyone had any experience with this particular knife, or if you had any suggestions for someone just getting into knives. I appreciate all the help

What I can tell you from what I learned as someone new to knives a year or so ago, there are about double the amount of options and opinions on knives as there are guns. There are a lot of good guys on here that will give you some great advice on what to look for and they're personal favorites but ultimately it comes down to what fits and works best for you.

After asking opinions and researching last year, I settled on a benchmade mini griptilian for my EDC, it was the perfect combination of good steal (154CM), good size (not too big or too small), and price point (around $80, not bad for a US made benchmade), but not such a high dollar knife that I'm scared to use it.

All this being said, this is one mans opinion, so my best advice is get something, try it out, if you don't like it, get another, and another, AND ANOTHER! (I have noticed due to their somewhat easier to swallow price points, knives can be more addictive than guns, plan to have plenty!)

I own a bunch of knives. The big questions are how you are going to use it, and how hard you are going to use it. I think good blade steel is important, and would probabaly set 154CM as a minimum for my EDC. LOTS of really great knives out there. So, personal preference means a lot.

HK makes really good knives they are made by benchmade, but not all are made in the usa. The higher end ones are. I had one I sold called the axis I think. It was a copy of a standard benchmade and was very nice I am more into spring assists though. Kershaw is a great knife for the price.

And BTW... I like folders, because they don't cut when they are closed. Makes them a lot easier to carry IMO. There are a billion choices from Benchmade, Spyderco, ZT, etc. I'm a big fan of all 3 of those brand. Currently, I am carrying a Hinderer XM-18. They are expensive, but are worth it to me. If you want a Wharncliff, like the instigator, they make 'em...

I will agree that the USA made ones are decent, the ones not made in the USA, I have access to everyone of them but I will never sell one, I only sell knives made in the USA and knives that I truly believe in

if you are wanting a $40 or less knife I would suggest you go for a Kershaw before you consider the HK,

many people believe that when a Firearm manufacturer puts their name on a knife that that company makes them, sadly that is not the case with the exception of Glock who only make a fixed blade to the best of my knowledge

finally I will say this, in my honest opinion Kershaw make the best entry level knives, the USA made ones, and if you want to spend more  Zero Tolerance you can find a 0350 for a little more than $100 that will be well worth the money and last you a very long time, I think I may know a guy who could get you one if you are interested let me know

I like the Kershaw that I carry currently, I'd just like something a little bigger and spring assisted. I've done a little research since posting this and I've fallen away from the HK. I think I'm gonna buy a Boker Lil Giant. It's $30, and it will give me an idea of the feel of carrying a fixed blade so I can judge whether or not I want to carry something other than a folder on a regular basis. Then if I like it I'll spend a little extra and pick something like the Izula or Becker Necker up. I see this getting addicting pretty quickly.
