Dillon Square Deal B

Recommended Posts

I just found a complete in box SDB 9mm setup for a really good price on another forum. Early Christmas present for me I guess....

I only load 9mm and .45ACP in handgun calibers, so may end up getting a caliber conversion kit for the .45 in the near future.

I also have to figure out where/how to mount this press - may be time to get an Inline Fab quick detach mount.

I know Dillon has their No BS warranty so if anything breaks I am good. But what do I need to know about the SDB, anything worth buying to keep on hand (extra primer tubes and maybe the small parts kit I assume)? How easy is the powder measure to dial in - should I get the quick change setup that includes an extra powder measure when I get the caliber conversion?

I will probably throw up a WTB ad in the classifieds section soon to see if anyone has a conversion kit or other parts I could use.

Nothing loads simple pistol ammo faster than the SDB! At least nothing without spending four times as much money.

I leave mine set up for 9mm.  Changing calibers is not hard.  But caliber choices are limited because the SDB does not use standard died.

I found the powder measure to be pretty accurate.  I check the throw weight once every 50rds, and it doesn't change.

I broke the plastic nipple on the end of the primer feed tube several times.  Dillon always sent new ones for free, but that is a part I should have kept on hand.  The frame on mine also cracked where the press was mounted to the bench, but Dillon, of course, rebuilt it.

I planned on buying a couple extra primer tubes.

For now, just going to leave setup for 9mm. I will get a conversion kit but don't need it right away, unless i come across another deal.

I think the 2nd powder measure will make sense to buy - avoid any hassle with changing calibers. Or I find a load that works with both calibers.

I'm a Dillon cheer leader myself... I'll join the chorus of "congratulations"... They are the best of the best... The second powder measure thing is a good idea....

Now to get my 650 changed over from 44mag to 44 special....

got my first dillon 550 in 84.  got my second dillon 550b in 2002.  both are running today as good as day one.  yes small things have broken, but dillon sends the part to fix what is broken.  i have looked at the square deal,,,,but the working area is smaller and it harder to change calibers.   it would have to be a great price before i would buy a square deal.   the price different between the square deal and the 550b is not that big for the base models.  but,, if i found a square deal on the cheap i would get it to load a single caliber only.

I have a SDB I bought on evilbay about 15 years ago and Dillon has always been there to replace parts for free. I have my to load .40 cal and .38's, I have contemplated getting another to keep each press set up for 1 caliber. I started out on a single stage rock chucker and literally I could not walk past the SDB without cranking out 15-20 rounds and chuckling to myself at all the time I had saved over the single stage. Is it the best press out there, no, but I don't think for the money you can beat it. If you shoot more than you can crank out on a SDB you need to just buy it by the truckload. I have thought about getting a friend to place a wager, the bet would be I will load up 100 rounds of .40 cal, let him/her to load their mags up and when they begin shooting I would start reloading again. At a time say 1 or 2 hours we would quit and I will bet I have more than 100 rounds loaded up when they quit. I can load good quality safe ammo at a rate of 200-250 rounds per hour if I have a full hopper of powder and 3 or more primer tubes loaded up. Enjoy it!!!
