I had the pleasure to meet him a few times in an informal setting.  He was as genuine of man as you could meet.  He was also a great competitor.  The golf world has lost a legend.   RIP.

He was almost solely THE reason golf really took off in the 60's for us hoi polloi, then as part of the Triumvirate that included Gary and Jack for many years. Not until Trevino came along was there a champion with even a more humble origin.

And yes, he was undoubtedly the very epitome of the word gentleman.
