Sure looks like it, although I'm not a metallurgist, don't play one on TV, and haven't stayed in a Holiday In in quite a while.

That's in the area just behind the chamber, normally occupied by the left side locking lug when the bolt is closed - correct?

Exactly. Good eye.

I got my M44 out to find your point of view...

I'd probably shoot it to see if the crack opens up any - although I wouldn't recommend that to anyone else....

I didn't notice it until after I had put about 20 rounds through it. Found it this evening just looking in there with a flashlight.

I've seen some a lot of metal parts repaired over the years. Would it be possible to silver solder this? And then grind down smooth and even. Maybe..........

Yes, definitely appears to be a crack. Can you zoom out some and highlight the location?

No this is on my phone. It's in the wall of the receiver on the left side if you're looking in it, where the bolt locking lug sits...not on the contacting locking surface but in the cavity area.

By chance, do you happen to know the date on the receiver?

The one stamped on it currently is 1928.

For clarification, I meant the receiver date, not the barrel stamping.  There have long been rumors of some metallurgical problems with some early 20's receivers, and I was wondering if perhaps yours might be from that vintage.

Can you find the same crack on the out side of the receiver ring? The early Mosins had a bad reputation for weak receivers that normaly ended up as head space issues. You might have one that's too hard.
