True. You've got to live within your means, whatever they may be.

But, would you rather have a $150,000 job where you work 80hrs per week and hate every second of it, or a $35,000 job you can't wait to get up and go to every day?

Honestly, it would be really, really hard to live on $35K... I'm happy where I'm at. I don't "love" my job but I make a good living and I enjoy my job enough most days that it's worth it. Now, there have definitely been points in my career where I was miserable and willing to take a pay cut to find something else. Thankfully those days have passed. I definitely get what you're saying. My boss works 60+ hours a week and literally has no life outside work. She is a completely miserable person most days. She admitted she loves money which is why she puts in the long hours in search of that next promotion.

While on the topic, check out this article I read earlier.

Having had the latter... can I try the former for a while? Just to see?

How depressing.  All but the guy at the poverty line thought tax rates were okay, and that guy wanted to tax the rich.  And, I had no idea union dues were that high for a poverty level worker.  Unless those dues include some meaningful health insurance or pension that's disgusting!

I have a few friends that truly subscribe to this theory. One of my good friends is like a gypsy. He is in another country or state constantly. Hell, he's lived all over the US in the 10 years since we graduated H.S together. In some ways I'm jealous of him but then we will try to go out for drinks and he never has money.

Being happy is important but I also couldn't go through life being constantly broke.

I'm happy that he's happy, right up to the point where I will have to pay for him to live when he gets too old to traipse around the world and he has no SS, savings, or 401k to even try to live on.

I'll take the $150k job that I hate. I can retire 20 years earlier. YMMV

I've had the former, though at about 1/3rd the pay, and it really sucks. You can't ever get away from it... nights, weekends, vacations... it never stops.  It wears you down really quickly.   I had bosses that probably were at the $150k mark who worked more than I did, one quit counting after 120 hrs. I was happy to escape that life.
