Question regarding school zones

Wasn't sure where to post this, apologize if in the wrong area.

Where I live in Springfield TN, there is a school directly across the street from me. My road dead ends at a church, maybe 80-85 yards away. There's not enough room in the school parking area for the parents to pick up their children so they line up on the road in both directions.

My question is this.... let's say someone calls the local police informing them that I'm carrying a firearm, will I get in trouble if I'm on my own property?

No, you can posses that firearm on your own property as long as you are not a felon or have been convicted of domestic violence. Don't point it at anyone. If it is a handgun keep it holstered and if it is s long gun keep the muzzle pointed down. Please don't push the envelop by standing outside with an Ar-15 slung across your chest, lol.

What he said. You can do what you want on your own property, just don't be stupid about it. ;)

Tell that to the kids that got expelled from school under the school district's zero tolerance firearms policy for playing with airsoft guns in their own yard simply because there was a school bus stop adjacent to their property.  Was in the news a year or two ago.

Just goes to show that you never know what can happen when "it's to protect the children".

I assume you mean this?

Add that to the list of reasons why my kids can't have airsoft guns.  Buy them baseball gloves instead.

I'm sure the "history of behavior issues" played into that, and I'm also sure any lawyer worth his salt could've gotten that overturned, though it certainly shouldn't have to come to lawyers. Sounds like the neighbors didn't like those kids and were looking for an excuse.

I've wondered about a person carrying on their own property but then checking their mail.  When I check my mail, I am typically standing in the street, and the mail box itself is on the right-of-way.  Here in Georgia, they apparently consider a school bus stop to be something ridiculous (like 12 feet from the curb, which would put a kid halfway into my yard).  If your house was next to a school zone, how would that affect you?  I know realistically that someone is probably not going to be arrested checking their mail, but if the perfect storm arose (an open carrier checking their mail which happens to be right next to a school combined with a nervous nellie and an anti-gun DA), there could be trouble.

If you're concerned about it simply carry it concealed. I know both concealed & open carry is perfectly legal with a HCP, but sometimes low profile is the best policy. Don't scare the sheep & they won't cry "wolf". :cop:
