Does anybody squirrel hunt anymore?

Recommended Posts

Love squirrel hunting. Been doing it since I was a little kid. Meant to go this AM. but sore shoulder changed my mind.

Finding a place to hunt around here is near impossible. Everything is either cut up in 1 acre tracts, or posted by the antis'.

I've hunted squirrels since I was a young boy, but in the late fall and winter. The trees still have full foliage, which makes it almost impossible to see them... at least it does for these tired old eyes. And, they still have all of the parasites on them. Same with rabbits. I used to always wait until after a hard freeze to hunt them, after the trees had shed their leaves.

I too grew up hunting small game ( squirrels, rabbits, and groundhogs ) just to have a little meat on the table, as Dad always put it!  Now I hardly ever get a chance, and most of the younger folks see it as just a bunch of nasty animals or rats with long tails.  What they don't know is that they are delicious and great for building a social bond with the old man!  When will they learn to skin and eat something without going to Walmart for those microwave packaged bits of "almost" chicken?

I began hunting small game such as squirrels and rabbits at age 8 when my parents bought me my first shotgun for Christmas. It was a single shot 4.10 and my Uncle Teen took me hunting and taught me all about gun safety and how to hunt. I hunted small game and in later years big game like deer but never lost my love for small game until I got to old to make the long walks in the woods. Then as some have mentioned, finding land to hunt is almost impossible without driving many miles. I did pass down hunting to both of my sons and they have continued the tradition to their sons. I did go a few times last year with my sons youngest boy that came along late in years for them and he is now 10 years old. He is a good shot and he managed to bag 5 squirrels while grandpa got 2. We took them back to the house and he had them cleaned and ready for the freezer in about 20 minutes. If I really wanted some squirrel I have about 20 here in my yard every day cause I feed them all winter with 6 squirrel feeders and I have a pellet rifle that makes almost zero noise but I enjoy watching them to much to shoot them. Would be like shooting pets as I have been feeding them for about 12 years now. I do think I am going to try a deer hunt this year as I have not been since 1990 but 10 year old grandson has invited me to go and my sons land has plenty of deer on it. His older brother and he planted some deer plots last Spring and I think I will give it  a try since he has an ATV for me to use and it's only about 400 yards from his house through the woods on well made ATV trails.
