Moving While Waiting on an NFA Item

Recommended Posts

As we all know, NFA items take far too long to process. That was just increased with 41F. Now we are looking at a year.

Well, life goes on while we wait. Sometimes those changes are big.  In my case, I'll have a child by then and will have a change of address. That leads me to my next question.

What do we do when we have a change of address (within the state) while waiting on a Form 4? Notify the ATF before hand? Mine won't be approved this year. It was submitted 7/12 and check cashed a week later.

No need to call them they won't be able to find your pre-approved form.

The approved Form 4 will go back to your dealer so you shouldn't have any worry about anything being lost in the mail.  When you pick it up you could then file a 5320.20 - application to transport NFA item. On it there's an option for permanent.  This is the same form you'd use if you want to take your weapon to another state for a shoot, vacation, etc.

In state moves do NOT require this but they ask that you do it.  It would nice to have an approved 5320 with your Form 4 if you're ever questioned.  However, again, this is one of the rare cases where they ask you do this and not mandate you do.

I eventually called. Basically the ATF agent told me to break the law. If the jail that my can is in won't let me use a new address (which my class 3 dealer are all ass holes) then to keep my old DL and just use that. Otherwise, they may require me to file my 5320.20 then wait for the response before picking it up. Wish we cad a better NFA dealer.
