REALLY!?!?!? Police shoot civilian training academy student

In today's atmosphere of police shootings and with so many modern and safe training equipment how can anyone be so stupid?   IMO this is totally inexcusable.  Everyone including the police should know at least a couple of basic gun rules..1) Treat every gun as if it is loaded  2) Never point a gun at anything you are not willing to destroy......Geezzzz.  With simunitions, airsoft, or even painball guns as options how can this happen?  Several heads should roll in this department.

How about we combine BLM with ELM (Elderly) with WLM (white) to make ALM (All)... 

How about we raise LEO pay so we get a better applicant pool?  How about we start training them better?  And make anyone who enters the academy who has never handled a firearm before go through extra training?  There are departments in this part of the country where their academy is 11 weeks... 11..  Another friend's academy was 28.... 

I'll make a friendly $1 wager that this LEO was not a "gunner" before he/she went to the Academy and thus the "every firearm is loaded" hadn't been ingrained for many years...

Many departments do not want people who know anything about guns....they want social workers. As such they arm the disinterested and apathetic and turn them loose with predictable results..... 

The issue here is one of control by whoever was running this exercise. In the end SOMEONE has to be responsible for there being NO live ammo on scene and be responsible to make SURE that every single person with a firearm only has blanks in their mags. (Which goes back to no live ammo on scene). But it is not like this does not happen in the military too....

Exactly.  Every exercise should have someone in charge of safety to check the ammo.  What happened was a complete human failure on many levels where it shouldn't have been.  Tragedy doesn't do this event justice.

The report says it was a revolver and he fired "several shots" at her. I was assuming 1 shot from sort of striker fire but several shots from a double action?

Having a loaded weapon and thinking you have an unloaded weapon and then pointing it at someone and pulling the trigger cross the line; it is reckless. So I assume charges will be filed.

Before you can even get to that, I don't see a need for blank fire, or even an unloaded gun in a training situation like that.  A rubber gun with a loud shout of "bang" would suffice.

In the Rockwood incident they were supposed to be shooting blanks but live ammo somehow ended up in the gun. Why is live ammo allowed anywhere in the vicinity of where these simulations are occurring!?  Every gun, ammo belt, mag pouch, pocket, etc. should be emptied and checked before entering the area...there should be no live ammo even allowed on the property.

Another case crossing the line from negligent to reckless. Obviously he swapped out the magazine without clearing the chambered round. The same level of safety is required for blanks as is for live ammo. He wasn’t qualified to meet that requirement; and that’s reckless when you are going to have live fire.
