In TN a yellow light, by definition, means to prepare to stop by slowing your vehicle. If the vehicle can not be slowed to a stop in a safe manner, given vehicle weight/ type of brakes/ speed/ weather conditions then you must continue forward through the yellow light before it turns red and clear the intersection entirely. Further, if you are stuck in the middle of an intersection after a yellow light, you are to clear the intersection at the nearest opportunity thus avoiding congestion for the opposing traffic.

Yes,that is true, but I have never received a citation for doing these things, and I live two minutes from one,and go under it multiple times a day;Being stuck while turning, having to stop because of traffic, etc.

These lights only get the folks that run the lights. As its been noted, there is an over site on these before the citations are mailed, meaning if someone is caught in one of your scenarios, you will not get the citation.

ETA; The one by the house also sits in a school zone, and I have been caught under it several times from the crossing guard, and I have never received a citation from that either

This info is all over the net with countless articles, research, and dollars invested. Here's a couple, both from the National Motorist Association: Increased Yellow light times and Red-light cameras

Thanks
