OWB carry: slide or paddle holsters?

I am new to the holsters and not sure what the differences are between them. Which would be better for concealed carry? Slide holsters or paddle holsters?

I don't think either one is more concealable than the other. The slide holster might be a little thinner overall. I have both, but I prefer a belt holster. It feels much more secure and stable compared to the paddle or slide holsters and is just as concealable, if not more.

I use a slide for my 1911 when carrying OWB. Hugs the body.

What are you carrying?

Depends on the type of holster you are using, and the type of belt you are using.

I have found that paddle holsters are more secure, and sturdy. However they also tend to be a little thicker then a belt holster.

I like my paddles though! It seems I always have a belt loop in the way of where my belt holster needs to be.That problem is N/A when using paddles.

What type of paddle holster do you have strickj? I would love to find one that is secure and fits tight. I can't stand the one I have.

I am exactly the opposite. I have tried paddle holsters, and do not like them. I find them quite uncomfortable having the paddle there. I have seen paddle holsters break off the paddle during training, and others pull the holster out with the weapon during a draw (I did that once myself with a Fobus).

I much prefer OWB belt holsters, but that is just me. YMMV.

I'm not a fan of slide holsters. There are different variations, but I'm just not wild about leaving the muzzle exposed. The muzzle and front sight could be damaged, or damage something else. The other thing that I don't like about them is that if your cover garment rides up a little, anybody will instantly recognize the gun.

For OWB, I prefer a standard belt / pancake holster. The pistol is secure and protected.

The only advantage of a paddle holster is that you don't have to remove your belt to put it on or take it off. The ones I've looked at are more difficult to conceal because they are bulky. I use one at the range sometimes, but never use it for concealed carry.

I also can't see any benefits to a paddle for OWB conceal carry. I have never had one that rides tight and they tend to move. Now for open carry they would be just fine.

I'm carrying a subcompact XD9.

Fairly thick gun, I have a XD .45 service and if you slide it slightly back to the 3:30 or 4:00 position you will get good concealment under a jacket or sweater as it will sit up by your kidney.

I would try and find someone or local shop that has both and try and see what works best.

Looks like I'll be checking into a belt holster of some sort. The Blackhawk is ok for now, since I can wear a jacket. But come springtime, I'll have to get something easier to conceal...preferably OWB. Can't afford to buy bigger pants! :D
