I could see that, straight line distance on google maps shows it at 823.48 miles.  That thing flying 2000mph+ isn't going to be able to do an emergency u turn lol.

Yea, it takes a state and a half the size of Texas to turn at top speed. And it's done by computer because any sudden monuments would make it fly apart.

I did hear tell of them launching. A missile from the s71 once and only once. The blackbird was so fast it goto in front of the missile and got locked on. Had to outrun it. True of not I don't know but it's been going around the air force for years

Oh that would suck!

Oh they just sped up until the thing ran out of fuel from the way the story goes.

Imho, they screwed up getting rid of a plane that could take a picture of a Coke can from 80,000 feet and tell where it was made.

satellites do all that now, but I was googling because of this thread and they are talking about doing an sr72 with a hybrid scramjet engine that can do 4500mph by 2030.

I don't know if they ever armed the thing or not, but I know the CIA had the piggyback drone on a modified A-12. I think they may have had 1 successful test launch, but then the next one crashed the A-12, killing the LCO and ending that program. After that, the CIA launched those drones a few times from B-52 wing pylons before tossing them in the AMARC bone yard in Tucson.

Yep. The two M-21s were modified A-12s.

I had the Cobra Night Raven. It was by far my favorite GI Joe toy. Good memories.

Not to derail this thread, but the incident about a sled almost shooting itself down. It brought back a memory of Dick Stratton, USN Vietnam POW. He was an A-4 driver and he shot himself down. Getting captured is always a bad thing. But shooting yourself down and being a POW for over 6 years was rough. He did have a sense of humor about it though.

If you have a hour to watch here is the sled drive doing a speaking engagement

Great presentation, thanks for sharing.

Here's another one from another sled driver: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-5nSKLyrM1s

I've seen several presentations from the Western Museum of Flight, put on by Peninsula Seniors Productions, and found the stories from the pilots and people involved to be informative and entertaining. Check out their Youtube channel if you like to see more.

Two more good ones:

Don't forget, this was 1950's technology. Just imagine what we don't know about now.

Before the habu would take off from Kadena. it was amazing that the local Japanese new roughly what time wheels up was and would gather at the end of the runway with cameras supporting lenses as big as your leg to get snapshots of the take off.

I actually own a sr 71 Unobtainium piece that was made into a wristband by a former SR 71 machinist. Complete with the Lockheed Martin skunk works skunk in the center.
