Water Transfer Printing?

Recommended Posts

Has anyone tried this method for "coating" a gun, or anything else for that matter?

I don't know a lot about the process, but I did pick up some blank/plain ATV parts (fenders and such) in Canada and delivered them to some place in Michigan where this Water Transfer Printing was beig done. They allowed me to walk through the shop to see how the process worked.

It was actually very interesting. They had huge immersion tanks that appeared to be filled with nothing but water. They would submerge the plain ATV parts into the the immersion tanks, and when they pulled them out the parts would covered in a perfect camo pattern. It was pretty amazing. They did other paterns, but camo is what they happened to be working on at the time.

I didn't have a chance to really talk to anyone about the process, but I suspect that there was some type of water soluble film that was floated in the tank.

I'm wondering if this is the same process used by manufacturers of store bought guns that are already camoed.

Here's a link to someone who was advertising on Craigslist. There is some real neat work.

Yeah, they float a film on the water and when the parts are pulled out the film clings to the parts. Its a pretty cool process to watch.

Lakota Industries is one such company, and they're actually the first U.S. decorator licensed to apply Crye Precision's MultiCam. Photos in the link. Decription and all that jazz on the rest of their site. They do other finishes/camos besides MultiCam of course.
