I've seen some police trade-in Sig P228s around at some pretty good prices. Anyone have any experience with these? Thinkin about pickin one up to add to the 'ol carry rotation. Any info is appreciated. ;)

While I have no direct experience with a 228, I reckon any SIG will be a quality pistol. My department issue gun is a 229, and it's a better shooter than I am (most of my guns are ;)).

What you'll find with most LEO trade-in guns is: holster wear, seat belt dings, and cosmetic blemishes but low round count. Most LEO trade-ins have been carried a lot, shot very little.

YMMV :2cents:

BTW........who's got the trade-ins, if I may ask ?

I have a P228, and it is a great gun. It was made in 1989 and still functions perfectly. Personally, I think the P228 is the best P Series handgun SIG ever made. I recently used it in a CIS Defensive Pistol Class; shot around 1,000 rounds over 2 days, and did not have a single problem.

They are great guns (as are all SIGs), so if you can get one at a good price.........do it! Too bad SIG is no longer making them. :D

Hi,

I have several 228's, both are West German, which some people on the SigForum prefer over the later versions. My first I bought new in 1993 and the other (same vintage) is a recent addition that is my EDC with Crimson Trace grips. I can't say enough good things about the 228. Balance is the thing that struck me the first picked one up. You can get MecGar 15 round magazines that are flush fit. Or, if you add an x-grip adapter to 17 round MecGar sig p226 magazines, you now have 17 +1 capability in an compact, easily concealed package.

Bud's has some 2-tone 228's for a pretty reasonable price. Frankly, I may have to pick up another.

I also own a West German 226 (1990 vintage) as well as a pair of German proofed sp2022's. I am a big fan of Sigs....

Well, just picked up my new Sig P228 police trade-in from Buds. I'm pleasently surprised at how good of shape its in. There are no scratches on the frame, the majority of the slide is fine, there are some minor scratches and pits on the muzzle of the slide, and there are just a few nicks around the magwell I'm assuming from slamming the mags in. The night sights are pretty much done though. It was a little dirty on the inside, but overall its in pretty good shape. Trigger is pretty smooth. Pretty good deal for $450.
