Bushmaster Ar 15 A2 question

I bought a new Bushmaster AR 15 A2 (fixed handle) back in 2004 when the "Clinton Ban" was lifted. I still have it and it functions great. I had a friend tell me to "get rid of it because it's a commercial gun" . My Bushmaster has a 1/9 barrel that is 16 inches and is chambered for both 223 and 5.56.  I didn't want to get into a pissing match with him , so what is the deal with my rifle ? It has functioned just fine over the last 13 years .

Any ideas  or thoughts ?

A couple of questions;

When you pull the trigger does it go bang 99% of the time?

  1. Yes: Keep it
  2. No: Fix it

Does it hit where you aim?

  1. Yes: Good, keep it
  2. No:
    1. Is it you?
      1. Yes: Practice
      2. No: Fix it

Bottom line, are you happy with it? If the answer is yes, then don't worry with what others say.  You won't get your return on investment,  ARs have become much cheaper since you bought yours.  While I don't like the ARs with handles, I like flat tops, there is nothing wrong with them, I used that version for over 15 years.  And if you absolutely must, then you can just do some upgrades to it, new upper, PSA has some cheap ones this weekend,  new barrel/caliber etc.

I suspect your friend is referring to the trivial differences between mil-spec guns and commercial spec guns.

Otherwise, what they said.

Yeah I believe he said something to that sort also. I am more of a pistol guy and he is a rifle guy. But I know the rifle shoots great and runs perfect. I guess he was just being arrogant. I just figured I'd ask on here to see what the heck he meant. I see now that he was probably just a smartass.

The most relevant difference is in the buffer tube size. If you have a commercial one, just be sure to get a commercial stock if you ever want to swap it out and try a different one. A mil-spec stock will not fit on a commercial tube, and vice-versa. Many of the major manufacturers of AR furniture offer their stocks in both sizes.
