Can you put a recoil pad on the shortened stock and still be legal?

You'd have to ask Max Kingery in Martinsville, but he'd probably rule that it has no other useful purpose but to "redesign" the firearm to be fired from the shoulder, as it has not even the niche purpose (theoretically) served by a pistol forearm brace.

This was posted on another gun forum. I do not know if it’s correct or not. You would be responsible for contacting them yourself and making your own decisions based on what your understanding is.

This was posted about putting a butt pad on a Rand Hand or Mares Leg.

I called my BATF field office and spoke with an Agent who was more than happy to address my questions concerning the Ranch Hand and easy to talk to. In a nutshell, you can do anything you want to your "handgun" providing you do not remanufacture the stock. Pads, covers, grips, or anything else you can think of that can be readily removed are not remanufacturering the firearm. You are okay as long as you do not put a rifle butt stock on the receiver.

I would say putting the recoil pad on the shorter stock would be fine. It's when you shoulder it that seems to change and redesign the gun from the popular view of the pistol braces.

Why do you need a recoil pad if your not shouldering it?
