How fast the gap can be closed

Remember it's not hollywood.  This thug with a knife is getting hammered with rounds and still closes in 25 feet or so before being stopped by the cop.

The cop was wise to put that distance between himself and the thug...I guess that's what they are trained to do because he immediately established distance when the thug pulled the knife.

Yep... that illustrates just how fast it really happens.  The cop was also smart to position himself such that any misses weren't going into the traffic.  Hard to tell what kind of building that is, but certainly a better backstop than a handful of cars.  The driver of the Suburban was smart to get outta dodge too.  I'd have been smoking the tires getting outta there.

I grew up in the city right next to Everett (place in the video).  Wouldn't surprise me one bit if the attacker was high on something that helped him close the gap despite getting shot.

Good tactics by the officer, and good on the city for releasing the video.  This is how close the guy got from a still shown by another camera...

As they say... Pistols suck at stopping fights! Distance was the key, and I'm sure that the officer had plenty on his mind with all the traffic around him.

Also a reminder to us all that LEO's have a Duty to intervene in situations like this. a civilian would be much less likely to intervene although I wouldn't turn my back on this situation for sure!

I believe the media now recommended the following steps in the use of force continuum to minimize loss of life. Only after these 6 steps can the officer use deadly force:

1. use harsh words in an authoritative tone
2. apply pepper spray to suspect's face
3. deploy tazer to subject's torso
4.  use baton to subject's extremities
5. shoot the weapon out of the subject's hand
6. shoot subject in leg

I'm joking, of course. Actually it reminds me of one of my favorite scenes from Demolition Man
