Bobcat??? - Latest Trail Cam Photo

Recommended Posts

Yesterday on the trail cam I have setup to keep track of the racoon activity in the flower bed I got this photo. I thought it was a bobcat and have been told that is what it is, I didn't know we had them in East TN. Looks a little hungry.

Looks a little lean and  long leged to be a bobcat to me most I've seen look more like this one can't get a good look at the ears or tail that is the best way for me to tell what they are

There are Bobcats in East TN, I've seen several on various occasions.  Looks like a young one.   And technically a Bobcat is a Lynx.

A friend of mine killed a 30 lb bobcat here in west Tn a couple of years ago and it was about that size. When you here 30 lb cat you think of a fat house cat. Not so with bobcats. They get big and lanky. When they get that big and old they are rare to see. Very smart.

My first year of college, albeit nearly 20 years ago, I did intensive research with large cats. If you just say Lynx you are referring to what we call a bobcat in Tennessee. There are several species of Lynx like the Canadian Lynx not found in the southern United States. But keep in mind, we can have hybrids of domestic cats and bobcats in Tennessee. It is not common, but it does occur. There isn't much there to make me believe that is anything other than a southern bobcat. The walk, the spotted legs, and even the lanky stature identify with what I know of bobcats. The only thing I can say that is weird is to see it on gravel. Maybe that was its only walking path, but I have seen and heard them walking to purposely avoid gravel and pavement. Also, the color is weird. It's not weird for a bobcat, but it is this time of year. Unlike domestic cats their coats change seasonally. Summer will have an orange tint to it. While this sounds impossible, it is actually just shedding of a winter coat.

Looks like young male that is looking for his own territory. He will fatten up as cold weather sets in

Yep, bobcat. We definitely have them in East TN. I've seen them on more than one occasion in the woods while deer hunting.

All the range maps show them over whole state. Actually, only a few areas in the US where they are not.

Thanks for the maps. I guess there are so few sightings because they are shy and avoid contact. Sent the picture to a local naturalist and she hadn't seen any in the area but did recently see several timber rattlers in the area.

When hiking in the woods, be wary of rattlesnakes sunning themselves on south facing slopes.  There's plenty of them around here.

Judging from the maps it looks like the bobcat also hates liberals. It looks like bobcats are avoiding liberal strongholds as well.

Yep, Bobcat.  I have had one patrolling my back yard for the last week or so that we have seen about three times.  Once he was stalking my Boston Terrier until my daughter intervened.  We have had wild turkey in the yard on and off for the last two weeks.  I think the spring hatch is what has drawn him in so close.

Beautiful . I was sitting on a dead end road near some woods. I saw a huge Lynx walk out in front of my patrol car and was so excited that I didn't hit my record button on my video system. He/She was a bit higher than knee level and had the ear and whisker "tufts" . The biggest wild cat I ever saw in Tennessee and I have been here 43 years.
