False walls hidden spaces

I tried a search on this so sorry if an old topic or I didn't search right. I have been thinking of making a safe room in a staircase going up to my bonus room. Just wondering if anyone had built aplace like this. I wonder If I could do it in one day before mama could see the mess. I want a section of the stairs to lift up.I have enough room for my gun safe and a room for the family for an emergency.Since it is centrally located n my home.If I would have thought about it when the house wasn't finished yet , would have been easier.Anyway does this sound like a stupid idea or a waste of time?

I just had a visual flashback of the The Munsters staircase, leading down to the dungeon / laboratory.

OK I know I am a dork but spot, their pet fire breathing dragon, lived under the staircase that lifted up. The stairway down to the lab was off the family room.

You are correct... the dragon (spot) lived in the staircase and the lab entry was in the floor / trap door.

Dork!

in one of my parents' house when I was younger, there was a 90* angled staircase, and below it was a coat closet (approx 3x3). at the back of that closet, was a half height door that went the rest of the way into the empty space under the stairs. You'd never know the door was there unless you moved the vacuum and pushed all the coats aside, and there was enough room in there for a family of 4 - tightly - and some supplies. if one needed more room, I'd suggest expanding down into the crawl space for weapon or supply storage, or even a second exit door out through the crawl space.

I think doing something like this is going to be easier to do than the idea you have of lifting up an entire staircase, assuming you can create access through a closet as I described.

Additionally, the staircase itself is generally pretty well built out of 2x's, probably best not to go cutting into that to degrade some of the best strength of the "hiding place".

DRM you had my memories on your brain when you wrote that post and you had my initials as your Login name. I bet I had DRM first and I don't want to give it away. We're already sharing it with those Digital Rights Management people. You can use it in TN but don't come to Ga trying to take it from me.:tough::tough::):chill::D

i'm wondering if your talking about a safe...like a small space, or a safe room...like a large space...if you removed one stair and boxed it in from the back kinda like a shallow toy box and used a hidden hinge on the actual step depending on the width of your stair case I think it would house alot of cool stuff. could do more than one stair if needed. depending if your stairs were carpeted or just stained wood i think it would be pretty neat. and if you boxed them all in and only had one storage space it would be pretty hard to tell from behind which one was a storage compartment.
