Just a thought as we head into the Memorial Day observance period.

The traditional observance of Memorial day has been greatly diminished as the years have gone by. At many cemeteries, the graves of the fallen are increasingly ignored, and neglected. Most people no longer remember the proper flag etiquette for the day. Yes, there are towns and cities that still hold Memorial Day parades, but many have not held a parade in decades and all of this saddens me.

It's a great weekend for Bar-B-Ques, time on the lake and ball games but before we begin I just wanted to take a moment to say thank you to all the heroes that never returned and all warriors who serve or have served. Because of your sacrifices great and small, my family sleeps better at night and that gladdens me.

I wonder how many people rushed out of the office today to get a jump on their 3 day weekend and don't give a rats behind for the reason.

I feel MOST days of observance now are only a reason to "party hearty" and drink beer/eat bar-b-que.

Remember, because of the sacrifices of a few, the many have the freedoms they deserve.

This will be my first Memorial Day in Tennessee, and this statement seems odd to me. In my hometown in Michigan we always had a memorial day parade down main street that would culminate at the cemetery and a 21 gun salute. My family would go every year and it was always a very meaningful experience for me.

I suppose since that was always the norm for the vast majority of my life that I just expected it was the same case everywhere. Although now that I think about I don't see how any parade would work out in Knoxville, and regardless it wouldn't have that same kind of small town feel.

I'll end my rant with my sincere thanks for all those who have served or are currently serving to protect our freedoms.

I have, for the last few years tried to make it a point to visit the local Hardees or the like, and buy a breakfast or two for the vets who I know frequent there... Many good times and good conversations.

God Bless The Men and Women Volunteer Heros of our Armed Forces!

That goes for all of the vets and those who currently serve, on TGO. Thank you!

Here here! We all owe a debt of gratitude to the men and women not only serving today, but who have served in the past. All gave some; some gave all.
