Who knows about solar?

I think there might be some over thinking on this. A DC to AC inverter back fed correctly to the panel can provide the power. Switching to 120v LED bulbs now will take care of the lighting. Cheap and simple.

I am talking with someone who is a reseller and what he is telling me doesn't make any sense.

So who here is familiar with solar setups?

I might even pay you to setup what I am wanting.

I think you need to at least tell us what part of the state you are in?

Solar is in a very specific place right now where all of the resellers are really only interested in doing grid tie-ins and sellbacks to the power companies.  If you're looking for something outside of that very specific criteria, you're going to have to really work to find someone who'll work with you.

I think that's why most of the off-grid guys end up doing it all themselves.

In Chattanooga I was looking into solar and it was a bit more then we could afford at the time but the installers weren't exactly pushing battery backup based systems but it sounded like they would support it.

Where is the best source for solar panels for a DIY project?

I have had decent luck with the Northern Tool kits.  They certainly aren't the best quality, but they do ok for a specific task.  I have a solar powered shed using one of their kits - LED lights, chainsaw sharpener, and grinder.  Nothing that I expect long run times on and I only go in there a couple times a week, but it works.

For smaller applications, the Goal Zero stuff isn't bad.  I keep a small panel in my backpacking gear just to charge my phone on trips.
