TGO's Server Footprint

Could someone knowledgeable in the specifics send me or post TGO's server footprint, expressed in storage space used, bandwidth used, SQL database size, and conueries (if you have that information)?

I might (and I do stress, might) have a solution that might (and I again stress, might) help out a little, and the sooner I have the above information, the sooner I can find out whether I am just blowing smoke up all our asses, or trying to do something useful.

Tungsten is the only one that would accurately know. You can wait for him to see this thread, or PM him to be sure he answers back.

Already did. Negat response. Was hoping someone else would know, but I guess I will just wait .

Yeah... I'm sure he'll be along shortly. Maybe not tonight, but should be in the morning.

He does have a lot on his plate right now.

I wondered much the same, when looking at my webhoster (the infamous Network Solutions) who offers unlimited diskspace, transfer/bandwidth, unlimted MySQL Unix database (if that flavor works), PHP, etc etc for $30/month with a yearly contract. Even free domain registration.

http://www.networksolutions.com/web-hosting/package-comparison.jsp

I also PM'd to see if shared hosting like this might be viable, but no response; but of course I also understand how much of several kinds of pressure Tungsten is under, and I know he's trying his best. Well see what his prognostications are tomorrow evening, according to his latest notice.

Oh trust me, I understand full well he is busy - hence the post here, with the hope that someone else might know.

As for the situation, thanks to some creative volunteering on my part, I now have unlimited diskspace, unlimited bandwidth, and (I think) unlimited MySQL database storage, all on my account, for free (apart from my bi-annual charges). Given that I pay for the hosting myself for my webpage, and given that transferring domains is not hard... *shrugs* I just need to make sure that whatever load this webpage has is not past what my hosting company views as "unlimited".

Remember he is looking for space for 2 forums. I didnt know if some of you knew that. The other... www.Tennesspeed.net

Please don't mix up things like that. I understand the desire to help but Tennesspeed's fate will be independent of TGO's fate. The two have nothing to do with one another except for the fact that they share space at the same street address right now.

Tennesspeed's server requirements are much, much lower than those of TGO.

Well, if I can be of any help with either, Tungsten, please drop me a line. Honestly, I have more space and bandwidth than I could ever hope to use, I just need to run the numbers past my hosting company to ensure that it does not violate their concept of "unlimited".

While I am a firm believer in TANSTAAFL, consider this me trying to help out a little :D.

Which in this case, the punishment could end up being his hosting company throwing a shoe at him for server utilization. Other than that, I'm not sure how this particular good deed would go unpunished. :D

Folks, the problem with a lot of the virtualized hosting packages that go for under $100 per year is that none of them support the number of concurrent connections that TGO generates during the busier times of day. It's not so much about database size or physical storage footprint as it is about server lag and CPU sharing.

We've enjoyed snappy performance here because I've tuned the server that I own to provide maximum throughput for two sites in particular (this and another) and to not throttle either one of them. Using some of these budget hosting services would be like handing over the keys for the Corvette we've been driving the past two years in exchange for keys to a Ford Festiva.

I am also having to weigh the reputation of the hosting providers to make sure that what happened to Oleg Volk over on THR doesn't happen to us. Namely, that the hosting provider or person assigned to the account cannot somehow hijack the TGO installation and hold it for ransom or worse.

All of these things keep pushing us toward a more expensive, albeit more professional, hosting arrangement.

Hm. That I can certainly understand. You do not know me, I do not know you, etc. etc.

Well, regardless, if the situation calls for it in the future, the offer is still there.

Tungsten, I thought we were looking at $300 a month type of thing. Are we talking $300 a year???!!! Heck, I blow that much on porn... err, I mean, ummm...

I just read it for the articles, honest!

If we're looking at $300/yr, give me a way to pay with a visa, I'll cover the first year.

You can get pretty darn good shared server services for that, but certainly for $400/yr.

Tungie, you know, something like the Network Solutions deal, you can try them for 30 days w/ money back. Don't even have to transfer domain reg or anything. You probably know how to simulate beau coup simultaneous connections without ever opening site to the wild.

On higher end, Mark, you can actually get dedicated server service (meaning, you own 'puter in rack you control remotely) with dedicated IP and etc for $100/month and up.

Just depends on what the needs really are - and I certainly can't know that.

The vBulletin engine that runs the forum is maybe $150/year, roughly, depending on purchase/lease/update options.

Meaning, things go wrong and hard feelings can abound with repercussions finding the original do-gooder. Always in ways one can't foresee.

I think this thread has run it's course. Everyone needs to just sit tight and wait for the next official announcement about the server move. Thanks.
