First, let me say if anyone steals my idea I will hunt you down and....well say nice to meet you and then chat with you a while.

That being said, in a few weeks I will be attending TNGIC (Tennessee Geographic Information Council). For more information see here:

http://www.tngic.org/

Now, they have a poster contest in which any attendees can participate in. I have not done so in the past but wish to this year.

What I hope to do is do a map for the State of Tennessee showing in essence HCP's per Capita per County. When compare that to something like crime, violent crime, homicides, etc. Something like that.

I found this data:

https://www.tn.gov/assets/entities/safety/attachments/Current_HG_PermitHolders.pdf

Any ideas on what to compare it to and where to get the data?

An interesting statistic is arrests for illegal possession by county vs. % of residents with HCP.

Another telling statistic is % of HCP holders arrested for violent crime. In NY the number was ridiculously low. Much less than 1 per thousand.

I think you can do an interesting study.  I ran a quick look and got this:

Permit Holders   2014 Est. Pop.   % 0f Pop w/HCP  Crime Rate (per 1,000)   Number of Crimes    % of State Total

State of Tennessee     543,851           6,549,000             8.30%                         82.39                               539,625                100.00%

   Davidson                   31,458              668,347             4.71%                      129.35                                 86,450                  16.02%

   Hamilton                   25,411              351,220             7.24%                        91.99                                  32,307                    5.99%

   Knox                         34,490              448,644             7.69%                         75.96                                 34,077                    6.31%

   Shelby                      61,508              938,803             6.55%                       128.01                               120,174                  22.27%

Let us know how it works out.  (Sorry for the edits - Can get the layout right!)
