Leather?

I need to make about three knife sheaths here pretty soon. One for a Camillus/KaBar, and sheaths for two Esee 5's. I am completely out of leather. The last time I went shopping for some was at Pecham's in Elkton, KY and I left there angry because of 13 to 15 some-odd dollars a square foot prices. But that saddle leather is just a little too thick anyway for me. I really need to find some leather soon. Two of these knives are mine, but one of the Esees belongs to a friend of mine and I really need to get a move on.

Where does everyone find their leather at, hopefully at decent prices?

 

Also while I'm at it, what thickness would you recommend for sheaths and holsters?

I get mine from Sheridan Leather. You can buy from them online, but if you call them they're extremely knowledgable and helpful. They have a ton of inventory that isn't on the site as well.

If you want to buy local, your best bet is a Tandy leather store. I know there's one in Nashville.

Tandy Leather is where I get mine.  If you go to the one in Nashville ask for a guy named Keven Sutton (pronounced "key-ven"), very knowledgeable.

Hadn't even thought about them. I didn't know they were still around. I guess I'll have to squirrel some pennies away and pay Tandy a visit. I do need to restock some thread and get a couple more tools.

The thickness you want is 8-9 oz leather. Anything thicker will be hard to work with and look bad. Anything thinner will feel flimsy and wear out quickly.

 

The Tandy that everyone pointed you to runs a sale from time to time on shoulders, double shoulders, or sides for <$100.Other times I dig around their bins looking for odd shaped pieces like this, when they're on sale for around $20 or less.

Thanks for that. All the sheaths I've made so far were made from the saddle leather I got at Pecham's, and it was already dyed. At that time I didn't know they could cut the leather down for you, so I worked with that thickness. Somehow made 'em look decent, but it was a bear to work with, and there AIN'T no wet-molding.

FYI...this weekend Tandy on Harding Pl has 7-9 oz double shoulders for $39.99-$45.99. hey had hundreds of them in stock. I may go back and grab some more. That's as cheap as I've bought leather in a LONG time.

On a very disappointing note, I just found out Sheridan Leather is closing. They're trying to clear out all the inventory by the middle of May I believe.

Might be a good chance to stock up on some things.
