No, the magnums have a longer cylinder.
Those are somewhat common, but they are still pricey and desireable. Now it is the three inch 66 that is highly sought after.

 

So, would that not be an issue with the aforementioned "simply ream & polish the cylinder" .357 conversion?

No, a 64 can’t be a 65 because the cylinder is too short and a 65 can’t be a 66 because it doesn’t have adjustable sights.

Ok, I stand corrected once again. But there is a story that goes with it. Many years ago a range instructor at a large state prison I worked at had built a S&W 64 357 while he was at S&W armorer's school. Talking to him about the gun, I was under the impression it had a bored 64 cylinder. Obviously now with cylinder length differences being what they are, he must have put a 65 cylinder in the 64 frame while at the school. Why.... he wanted a personal marked 38 that may handle 357 due to state peace officer issue/carry regulations. God rest him, Richy died of cancer 6 months before he was eligible to retire. He's probably laughing now sayin, "I fooled ya"!

Actually, there are a few 64's that came as 357's and a few 10's that came the same way. The majority of those 64's were for Oklahoma State Patrol.
