State Rep. Mike Stewart wanted to prove a point about gun background checks

Hoping to prove a point about the ease of buying guns online, a Tennessee lawmaker brought a newly purchased assault rifle to work Wednesday.

OK we need a law against selling guns to politicians!

I saw that on the news this morning. Another guy told him to put it up and quit waving it around before he hurt somebody. Quite comical.

And he probably broke the 'no guns' sign law too if there are no gun signs at the capitol.  There is no exception for unloaded guns in that law.

He had the THP make it safe and escorted him in. Had a zip tie through the port and one of the other committee members freaked out it could be loaded. Then accused him of knowing nothing when he told him it was not loaded. Bunch of arsehats that need to go away. All of them. What happened to when you do not know something just saying that. "I am sorrry but I do not have enough knowedlge on that topic. I will research it and get back to you." And then do the research and follow up. Why do they always open the cookie hole and prove themselves to be ignorant?

They're politicians....that's what they do.

I didn't think the "stop pointing that thing at me" bit was out of line, however....zip tie or no.

I don't care if you have a giant purple chamber flag in your weapon. If you point it at me, we will have problems.

I take it you don't understand the basics of firearms safety and courtesy.

I do indeed. Not what he said, how he said it hit me as wrong. I agree never point one at anyone, that is one of the things I hate at gun shows.

Actually, never mentioned the pointing thing, someone else did. My comment was directed at the guy saying it could be loaded then telling him he has limited knowledge. Seemed like a dumb thing to say from my point of view. As for safety, why yes, I disagree with ever pointing a gun at people. Keep that muzzle up. I have no issue with someone telling him not to point that at me. As a matter of fact it is a great teachable moment. Of course they missed it but what do you expect from politicians?

I believe this occurred at the plaza, but both LP and the Capitol are posted LEO carry only and the entrances have checkpoints and metal detectors.  He probably cleared it with THP, but Article 2 Section 13 of the state constitution pretty much covers him.

First off, he didnt buy the over the internet like he claimed. He just made arrangements to meet and purchase it in a face to face meeting. Why is this any different than buying a gun from a classified ad in the newspaper or off a bulletin board. I dont remember anybody fussing years ago when those were popular methods of putting your firearms up for sale.

So (assuming both he and the seller are legally allowed to possess firearms) he conducted a perfectly legal face to face transaction in a parking lot? Which part of this am I supposed to be horrified by?

All those folks on the Subcommittee should know the law and one of the adults should have shut him down immediately. Even the Tennessean - as big of piece of crap as that is - at least got the title to their article correct. This thread and the Time article? Not so much...
