Recommended Posts

I am leaving on a Motorcycle trip Thursday. I will be traveling in the states of AL,GA,and FL. Can I carry concealed and loaded in all these states? I have researched and think so. I'm just trying to be sure.

TIA

In those states......Yes, you're covered by your Tennessee HCP.

Make sure that when those state laws contradict Tennessee laws, follow the local version.

For example, open carry is OK in Tennessee, not in Florida.

That's what I was needing to know.

Thanks

There are places you can/can't carry in each of those states, and they vary from TN and from each other. You can see particulars at handgunlaw.us and nraila.org/GunLaws/

Basically, what is legal in one state may not be in another so CHECK and RECHECK to make double darn sure. The hodgepodge of BS regulations that vary from State to State and then the cities within are major painintheasses.

Print out the laws, like where you can and can not carry, open carry or conceal, etc., make a binder to keep with you. Use the sites above and also go to the states website and search for more specific info.

In Fl you cant carry in the following:

The following is a list of places where you are restricted from carrying a weapon or firearm even if you have a license. Please note that this is a simplified list. The places marked by an asterisk (*) may have exceptions or additional restrictions. See Section 790.06 (12), Florida Statutes for a complete listing.

    • any place of nuisance as defined in s. 823.05
    • any police, sheriff, or highway patrol station
    • any detention facility, prison, or jail; any courthouse
    • any courtroom*
    • any polling place
    • any meeting of the governing body of a county, public school district, municipality, or special district
    • any meeting of the Legislature or a committee thereof
    • any school, college, or professional athletic event not related to firearms
    • any school administration building
    • any portion of an establishment licensed to dispense alcoholic beverages for consumption*
    • any elementary or secondary school facility
    • any area technical center
    • any college or university facility*
    • inside the passenger terminal and sterile area of any airport*
    • any place where the carrying of firearms is prohibited by federal law

Also, if you get pulled over you do not have to tell the LEO, but I do. They tend to let you off if you have a CCW here.

ADDED: you can also carry knifes, and other weapons on you here as long as you can't see them. Printing is ok.

I went to get my TN DL last week and the lady there told me that TN doesn't honor an Indiana gun permit (which is what I had). However, on the NRA web site it says that TN honors all states (universal recognition . . . as long as you're a resident of the state that issued the permit). I then proceeded to call a local sheriff's office and they said that TN doesn't recognize Indiana. I called NRA to see who was wrong and their lawyers came back saying that the NRA web site is correct and that the local offices just weren't up to speed on the laws . . . SCARY!

TN does honor all other state's permits. It's the law.

39-17-1351

® (1) A facially valid handgun permit, firearms permit, weapons permit or license issued by another state shall be valid in this state according to its terms and shall be treated as if it is a handgun permit issued by this state; provided, however, the provisions of this subsection ® shall not be construed to authorize the holder of any out-of-state permit or license to carry, in this state, any firearm or weapon other than a handgun.

It says the same thing on Dept of Safety's website

Now if you have an Indiana permit and want to get a TN one, you have to take a TN handgun safety course, see here. You can't just do a renweal like you can from some states.

That's main diff between "recognition" and "reciprocity". Maybe the only one.

The way I read the statute is that if you are passing through, fine. But, if you are working here, residing here, etc., you need a TN HCP.
