45ACP cases with large and small primer pockets

I just cleaned a bunch of my .45ACP cases and sorted through them all dividing up the small and large primer pockets .

 Are the small primer pocketed ones going to matter much as far as reloading for target and plinking  ammo ? Should I load them with the regular recommended powder grains ?

 It seems that most of my small primer pocketed 45acp cases are Federal .

I've been saving these up to reload. The research I have found indicates that the small primer cases will usually fire the same load as large primer brass but at slightly lower velocity (3-5%). When using high bulk power the difference is less than when using ball powder.

For me the only problem I see is if it's a load for a match and the ammo needs to be chronographed to make major power factor.

I haven't tested this yet myself but will be in the next couple of months

Will also add that I use the small primer brass where I generally don't try and recover my brass.  Classes, matches, etc.

That's my plan as well. It's why I've been looking at what the difference is. I think that with some powders the velocity difference is less than others. I will try titegroup first as I have a good supply.

Whatever a**hole dreamed up the 45 acp small primer case probably also designed the 45 GAP. Something unneeded that adds stress and confusion to our lives. Probably some government program for this. :wall:

I think the small primer .45 ACP brass is even worse than the GAP.  It means now that I have to sort all my .45 ACP brass to make sure none of the wretched small-primer brass is going to feed into my Dillon and jam it up.  It really is the answer to a question no one asked.

I learned about the small pistol primer brass with my Dillon, it stopped cold and I didnt know what was up. I have since thrown away prob 10 range pickups trying to get rid of all of the SPP cases. Fast forward to about a month ago and I was at a class where the guys next to me burned through 500 of them during the class. He said he was not going to keep his brass. It was at this point that I decided brass was brass and I collected his SPP cases. Saving them for when my LPP cases wear out. Brass is brass-Bill

Either sell it for scrap or to someone who wants to load .45acp along with their smaller calibers but only buy one kind of pistol primer.
