Gun stolen from airline pilot recovered

An airport janitor was arrested Saturday after a pilot reported his gun had been stolen while he was in the washroom at Philadelphia Airport. The unidentified pilot had cleared security and made the restroom stop on the way to his flight when the theft occurred. The airport was searched and witnesses interviewed, and it was determined the only person who entered the bathroom while the pilot was in there was a janitor. The gun was found in a janitorial supply closet.

The janitor was the only one in the airport with a key to the closet and he was arrested at the airport. He faces charges of theft and receiving stolen property. The gun was in the pilot's bag, which is authorized under the Federal Flight Deck Officer program that was enacted after 9/11. Pilots who go through the training are issued .40 caliber semi-automatic pistols and must follow strict rules in carrying them and storing them in the cockpit.

How did the janitor get into the pilot's bag unless he left it unattended?

It sounds like the pilot secured it in the closet while he used the bathroom but the janitor had a key to the closet.  I'm guessing that the closet is a designated safe place for the pilot to store their gun, good forethought by who ever is in charge of this program but huge oversight for anyone but the pilot to have a key.

While they may have a secured closet available, if it was me, I'd still take my stuff in the stall with me like everyone else.

I thought they were saying the janitor was the only one in the building with a key to the janitorial supply closet where the gun was found, not to some luggage storage closet.

In most airports there's a pilot's lounge. If this is where the theft took place, then I could understand the pilot leaving his bag in the lounge while using the can.

how does one get charged with both theft and receiving stolen property?

There could have been more stolen property in the closet than just the gun. But that's just a WAG.

I'm wondering if the media confused possession of stolen property with reciving stolen property? Or whether reciving/possesing stolen property are under the same criminal codes statute for PA?

I am familiar with FFDO and airports in general; I actually figured the lounge is where it happened. I know some of them have showers for pilots. The restrictions and policies for FFDO are rediculous down to the holster and how to secure it.
