Don't Drive Drunk

I also don’t care whether the cop jumped in back because he had nowhere else to go or he just jumped in the back when pursuing the guy; does not matter. He was in the bed of a truck attempting to capture a fleeing suspect. The Officers situation met the requirements for the use of deadly force. He was in danger of death or great bodily harm, he ordered the suspect to stop multiple times (according to the stories) and then he shot him.

He didn’t get a death sentence for DUI. It has escalated far beyond that; the suspect escalated it. The suspect made bad choices and he paid for them with his life. I hope the cop will be okay. I have been a Police Officer, I respect Police Officers, but I can’t for the life of me see who would want to be a cop in the climate we have today. Soon no one will want this job and we will have the bottom of the barrel as Police Officers. Sad.

If he jumped in the truck because he was about to be run over, which again without seeing video it doesn't sound like he was, that's one thing. If he jumped in the back of the truck because "I'm gonna get him", which at this point seems more likely to me, that's a whole other story. You can't put yourself in an unnecessary life or death situation and shoot someone to make up for your own poor choice.

On the last point, I think you and I can agree. I have no idea why anyone wants to get into law enforcement these days.

There are 2 paragraphs to this stories and maybe a half dozen details given.  There is so little information there is nothing really include to make a call on this one.  Will need more facts before we will know anything for sure.  Based on those limited facts I doubt there was enough wrong and their is enough room for doubt that anything legally will happen to the office so his worse case most likely is he is looking for a new job.

Thanks

Robert

Several have stated same.

In posting the article, I made no commentary or postulation on the officer's legal status.

As noted above, I *do* think he had a serious aww-****! moment when he realized where he was.

I ALSO think that the incident was avoidable.... by the driver.  Under no circumstances is it smart to drive off with a cop in the back of your truck, nor is it smart to bail out on an detention/arrest in the first place.

It was ALSO easy to avoid having a restaurant employee call in and report one's ***.

One life was terminated, and several others ruined, because of self-centered decisions made by those being investigated.

What if the guy was diabetic and having problems?

At face value from the limited information the officer had reasonable suspicion the driver was probably under the influence. You raise a good supposition but its less likely then you realize. At this point I will wait on further information before speculating.

You come to the crux of the matter. Speculation is really pointless for now. I suspect that the T.B.I. is investigating the shooting and facts leading up to the shooting. If so once they've completed it the results will be released to the County D.A. There are things about this incident that I am wondering about.
