Pet Peeve of a Curmudgeon

I noticed the contents shrinking sometime back, even seen a news report about it. They surmised that it was due to rising fuel prices then, so with the fuel so low why aren't they giving us more?

On the other side of the spectrum, aren't the soft drinks at fast food joints getting bigger? What they call medium was a large when I was growing up, now the large may as well be a 2 liter.

I was just thinking someone would come in here and try to tie this to liberal policies.  Like Pete eluded to, this is just companies putting smart people to the task of turning $1 into $1.10.

Sorry for jumping in so late. The root problem is that Wall Street doesn't give a rat's ass about profit. They only care about growth. So, if the top line doesn't grow, they will squeeze the growth from the bottom. THAT'S how you wind up short on pickles. Now, no matter what the cause (like liberal policies), if there isn't a vibrant economy, stuff is gonna get squeezed. Wages, quality, number of jobs, all of it suffers. I believe liberal policies have a huge impact. So do all my friends in business.

The reason is a one word sentence. GREED!!

i disagree. it simply is not the case. robert has the correct answer. as prices have steadily risen from manufacturers/producers (due in some part to .gov regulations), retailers have tried to do what they can to keep costs down on the shelf. this includes everything that has been mentioned and other things that may not be noticed.

check out a can of mixed fruit. the number of cherries in each can is controlled to keep prices down.

Yep. I forgot all about the cost of government regulations. They have increased all around us over the last several years, as the government saves us from all kinds of evil and unhealthy shit.

Profit leads to growth, so the two go hand in hand.  Without profit, growth can really only come through financing, and too much eventually leads to enough liability to make Wall Street get cold feet over a company riki tik. If they are only growing through financing and debt, they'll shut down before too long without making any decent profit.

Profit leads to growth, but it isn't growth. Growth happens with increased revenues, decreased expenses, or a combination of the two. It's why Wall Street tends to ruin companies.

A company can be profitable without requiring addition funding to operate, but may not grow from one year to the next. In order to keep the stock price flat or growing, the pressure (by investors) is to budget the company so shows growth, even if the top line is flat. So, the investors give you a number, and to hit it with revenue projections and adjusted operating expenses. I have been through those exercises a lot over the years.

That is because the Cup cost more then the soda going into it.  That is at the store level.  I use to see the invoices at chain locations at least.

Thanks

Shots fired... JMHO. :)

No kidding.

She might be extra fluffy, but let's see you get a dog to that age. Or 23 too. Because Bersa's done both. Animals are like kids, we don't bring them up just to say mean things about them. If you feel like being smartie pants, start talking about gayness, sparkles or something else. Bersa loves her and she's a happy dog. I have 5 foster dogs here I am fighting to make half as happy and healthy.

I'm Joking around, sweet dog but lets not call her fluffy. The F word you are looking for is Fat  I will say, if he got a dog to live to 23 I think I need to move in with Bersa cause that means I would live to like 140. I have four cats that I fight to make happy but they hate everything in the world :)

Joking is fine, but did you guys ever stop and think it might hurt feelings? Bersa loves her beyond belief. Any dog should be so lucky. Fat, fluffy or whatever you call it, Casey's a lucky dog to be so loved.

As for the cat situation, all I can say is, should've gotten dogs. :) Edited by MrsMonkeyMan2500

I like his dog, but there's no denying she's a biggun!

It's not even worth attempting to explain anymore. The bottom line is, it's just rude. It's like someone pointing out your child's flaws, you just don't do it, unless you feel like being a jerk.

It's not like pointing out your child's flaws. I love my pets but they don't compare to my 2 year old son. If we would have said that his dog needs to eat a sandwich because it's skin and bones would we be arguing that? Think about this for a moment. We are discussing the weight of a dog.... Bersa is a great guy, the dog was sweet but any vet would say she needs to lose weight. Hell, I've put on 15 pounds in the last 6 months. I am getting fat.... Err Fluffy.

BTW I would be willing to trade cats for a dog... My son loves my moms beagle and our friends puppy. I'm thinking maybe a 2 for 1 trade ;) I'm looking for a husky.

I would love to see manufacturers start holding the Gov accountable for the price of stuff. Something along the lines of a note on the label that says something like "$0.35 of this can of tuna goes to cover government regulation" or $0.65 of each gallon of this gas goes to tax". or at the very least one of those square barcode link things that could take you to a web site with current info. I think it would open up the eyes of some consumers.

Of course the next thing that would happen is a law prohibiting that practice.  :tinfoil:

I don't get it. My dog could lose a few pounds as well. Doesn't hurt my feelings if you point it out.

There is already a sticker at least around here detailing how much money from a gallon of gas goes to federal, state and local taxes.

I for one am thankful for dogs with excessive baggage. When they chase me :) I just got back from a ride and this farm dog came shooting out full speed and as I was planning my pass to avoid hitting him or getting bit, I saw him turn and his excess didn't which prevented a hairpin turn!

Poor guy! But he was hell bent to stop this 2 wheeled invader. I hope he didn't pull a muscle, geez!

Back to the topic, pet snack packages have gotten smaller too. Thank you socialism! Edited by Ugly

  • When was the last time you saw a 50 pound bag of dog food?

Thankfully they still sell those at Co-Op. But, yeah, that stuff ticks me off.

Sorry to resurrect such an old thread, but, I just had a craving for some fish and cheese sandwiches and opened a box of "Mrs. Pauls" crunchy fish sticks, 44 count.   Well the count was the same but the fish sticks are no bigger than my little finger now.  Much smaller than they used to be ...AAARRRGGGG!!
