LCP question about dry firing, needing to rerack each time?

Hiya peeps! I just got my Custom LCP from FFL today and was cleaning her up a bit and did some dry firing. I was curious to why there's no semi auto action with an empty mag in the pistola? I'm hoping it's a Ruger thang or for DAO type guns but any info would be great! I won't be able to take to the range until monday so wanted a cure of curiosity until then, thanx!

The act of the bullet firing forces the slide back, resetting the firing pin, ejecting the spent brass, and drawing a fresh round off the top of the magazine. Then slides the round into the chamber. Without the bang you will have to pull the slide back to reset the action manually.

Some guns require you to rack the slide to dry fire again after dry firing. Other guns will reset to allow you to keep dry firing by just pulling the trigger without needing to rack the slide. As a rule of thumb, I generally don't dry fire a gun without a dummy round in the chamber. It's called a snap cap.

If the question is whether you have to pull the slide to the rear each time to dry fire your LCP, then the answer is yes, you have to cycle the slide each time.  This applies to all striker fired pistols.

They made the LCP into a striker fired now? No hammer?

Honestly, I haven't seen a new one. I know they reworked the internals somehow, supposedly making for a better trigger.....oh yeah, it new, improved, and now red.

How would you describe the old LCP? I does have a hammer, but the slide doesn't fully cock it the best I can tell.

I've got an old LCP, its hammer fired with a DAO trigger. The hammer is surrounded by the back of the slide so it doesn't snag.

I've never seen a custom, so if they re-worked the internals and made it striker fired, that's news to me. May need to check one out if that is the case.

BTW, my old LCP warned against dry fire unless you used a snap cap as it could damage the firing pin. The custom might be different, but be careful dry firing it.

Aside from a few internal refinements the LCP is still a hammer fired, non striker fired pistol. It's action is cocked when a the slide is pulled back and released. Essentially this means whenever the process of chambering a round is preformed. The LC9 and SR22 are also hammer fired pistols with the LC9 being updated to the LC9s a striker fired pistol. l So in response to the OP you LCP is doining what it was designed to do. I believe you may have confused its function with a DA/SA pistol whiich fires or can be dry fired every time the trigger is pulled. Good question though.

There are a few double action striker fired pistols out there. Walther makes a couple and some of the Taurus models were DA strikers too.

The LCP doesn't really have a true double action trigger, even though it feels like one. Cycling the slide partially cocks the striker, for lack of a better term, and then pulling the trigger finishes this action.

This is my understanding of how to best describe how the LCP action functions. I've owned one since they first came out and it was my first carry gun. If you want a true DA pistol in a similar size, look at the S&W Bodyguard.

I'd say lack of knowledge more so than confused as I am an expert on confusion and craziness  :wall: , This is my first pistola I owned that didn't auto-fire empty, so I was curious as to why or if not? Thank you all for the edumacation, I really do luv learning on here!

I finally got her to the range yesterday along with a friends non-custom LCP, we both liked shooting them and the accuracy. Neither of us could tell the difference in triggers but I haven't shot much, he's been shooting most his life. Even with a pinky missing off the grip, the LCP is a delight to fire in my book. I would not hesitate to protect myself with it. I did have one  FTF using Blazer steel cartridge. I was a bit in a rush so I couldn't put many down the pipe but will have more time next trip. I didn't rush anything or wasn't safe, I just had to be to work in less time than I had bought the lane for  .

A couple people shot my Cougar yesterday and really liked it if anyone is looking for a full(15rnd) sized 9mm. They come in .40 and now .45 also but I don't know how they shoot but if anything like this Stoeger, it'll be very nice. They are inexpensive but still manufactured with Benelli name and machinery. Oops, am rambling :blah:  now...

Thanks again for input^ and keep the led a flyin'!!!

Edit: thinking back on the FTF, I believe the mag was released, not sure if I hit the release or? but pretty sure that was the cause...
