Dream come true they were there from 8 am til 3 pm never moved winner!!!!!

What happened at 3:00? I'm guessing they got it "fixed" just in time to be able to drive back and clock out for the day. Excellent repair skills.

Truck was broke down they stood around and watched it all day...

I supposed you would have pushed the truck back to the shop?

What I'm trying to get at is that most any problem you find with TDOT stems from poor management. These guys might be a symptom of a problem, but not the problem it's self.

You solve this problem by taking a gnat's hair worth of initiative.   You call your buddy at work who rides in a similar truck,  get him to pick you up, get back to the office, get another truck if available, or do paperwork or something else if not, or go home even if its truly that bad.   Even if you violate some rule somewhere,  any decent manager/superior will overlook it given that you were trying to get back to working rather that doing jack all day.

I don't blame them, mind you ... if the work environment is toxic and your superior is a bunghole and such, ... fine.   But assuming a half decent environment, you can make a call or two and solve the problem or get permission to bail out for the day.

I assume they have phones or radios. So their supervisors left them out there all day. Did you offer them coffee or to take them to lunch? biggrin.gif

They have VHF radio and phones both. They could have had that truck towed within an hour. The state has contracts, all you have to do is call. They either didn't want to fix it or had another reason to stay there.

Some times every now and then you just need a good reason to dick around all day, especially on a Friday. I know it's our tax dollars but who of us hasn't taken advantage to milk a day or two here and there?

I'm not making excuses for them, but they get no reward or recognition for working any harder and they have to be in some kind of well-connected click to ever get promoted.. That will only motivate someone to do as little as possible to keep from getting fired. Some jobs are geared toward attracting people with very little motivation and desire.

Maybe they were plan clothe police officers on a stake out too. If they were actually state workers I think they would have been missed by superiors or like a few mentioned, they do have phones and radio's to call for assistance if were really broke down.............jmho

I had the same thought bersaguy.  Sometimes the best way to hide is to be in plain sight.  Kinda like the "gray man" concept if SHTF.

I've made this argument many time for Forestry Aid positions (firefighters). If they're on-call, they'll sit around the shop and just drink coffee and dick around. When in reality they could do other tasks and leave if a call came in. But for $18k a year. You can't ask much. If I was getting paid that little I wouldn't kill myself either.

Must be nice to get to dick around all day sometimes. I ended up working my normal 10 hour day ,drive home and get called back in for another 11 hours, go home and sleep four and back at it again. :/

Not sure if it still happens, but I knew of several State employees who worked in the maintenance/painting departments at Tennessee Tech. They'd go to work long enough to clock in, then leave to go fishing all day. One part of the crew would do it one day, and the other part of the crew would do it the next.

I assume this was in Davidson county. Last I heard, there were 3 employees left in the maintenance dept. there. They aren't able to hire anyone else. That should tell you what a gravy, wonderful job it is. Who do you call?

Or NSA or FBI... Notice how small the TDOT logo is. It's off-center too. Seems whiter than the door itself, like it hasn't faded in. Looks like one giant magnetic sticky.

You should have walked over, offer assistance, and check out the truck. Or call Metro PD and report a suspicious vehicle and see how that pans out. :)  Nothing like ruining the day of FBI agents on a stake-out by surrounding them with weapons-drawn DEA agents. ("There's a drug deal happening in that, and i heard shots" ..lol)

lol I would have done anything for them if they really needed it,but, the fact that they were parked right next to a DAILYS gas station that had plenty of coffee lots of female traffic in and out of the store, clean bathrooms and a beer cave ,I didn't think there was anything I could offer them to make the situation any better. not even a rich or cell phone to use to call their boss would've done any good at this point it was a win-win for them. Plus there is no way in hell anyone was going to steal that truck they kept their elbows on it all afternoon nobody was going to take it anywhere

These guys will get and go to work in the morning just like the rest of us. Try to keep your texting to a minimum, as they work in the road, and you wouldn't want to get a dent in your car from running them over. Tomorrow evening when you go home, they won't be in the road. They'll be getting salt trucks ready to salt and plow snow tomorrow night so you can get to work thursday morning and make fun of them. They'll still be at work most likely going home Thursday evening.

As I said, they are hiring! ;) Start's out at $1604 per month.

Negative on the surveillance. There were a handful of other hands helping them wait on the tow truck to show.
