Arrests for student loan defaults

People are held in jail all the time for Failure to Pay (FTP). They stay until they or someone pays what they owe. I've booked many of them over the years @ the local lockup.

Wow, tough crowd. biggrin.gif

Best I can tell no one is being arrested for not paying students loans. A guy was arrested for failure to appear in court. It’s the same thing if you don’t pay a speeding ticket or go to court. The Judges issues a bench warrant and the next time you are stopped you go to jail. Are you in jail for a speeding ticket? No, you are in jail for contempt of court.

Life’s tough; wear a helmet.

I tried mentioning that was the issue at hand twice early on in this thread but it snow balled way off topic. Seems a lot of people had collegiate chips on their shoulders, lol.

I don't think my issue is so much the arrest, its the sending of the Marshalls in to make that arrest.  Most bench warrants never get served, that's because most only come up if you are stopped for any other reason and they run your name and it come up.  If it happens to be a criminal that may be a danger to the public, then yes they will actively seek them out but for something such as this??

Here is the fundamental issue that is lost in the entire national conversation

College is a business

It's a business which is funded substantially by the government- both via tax exemption and loans to fund its customers

Colleges only sell what people are buying

People have rarely evaluated the purchase of a college education in a rational cost benefit analysis. It has been assumed a degree gets you whatever It is you want. That is silly of course but people are silly and make bad decisions all the time

Those bad decisions are even more likely when funded via easy borrowing with payback in a nebulous future scenario of wonderful money making

Just because the college offers a degree in basket weaving does not mean the market values it. This is the cold hard truth of the world of supply and demand which liberals can never make go away.

Those are all failure to pay as per a court order though, yes? Like child support, fines, or lawsuit settlement. Again, they are being jailed for disobeying a court order.

"Normal debt" is not subject to a court order to pay. If the lender/provider/seller has no lien on some collateral he can collect, he just has to eat it.

That's true, as per court ordered payment. Otherwise, different animal.
