Light 20ga turkey load?

Recommended Posts

Well, my 8 year old daughter is jones'n for me to take her turkey hunting this season :)

Does anyone have a favorite load for light recoiling 20ga? What about the lightest for turkey? It will be shot from a Beretta A300, but I'm not concerned with cycling reliability. A light recoiling 20 is a lot of fun anyway

Can she handle a #4 or #6 HV factory load?

Maybe once, lol

I'm not sure what she'll be ok with. She hasn't graduated from the 22 yet, but I figured I'd load up something really light (but still effective for turks) and see how it feels in the Beretta. If it seems alright, I'll go from there. Edited by Wingshooter

Just call them in close, and almost anything will work.

I would probably just start working up a #4 load that she could handle, and limit her range based on where it patterns.

Hope you find something that works good. My brother told me about a guy he knows that was telling him about a kid that had killed several with a .410 shotgun. The light loaded  20 gauge will work just fine for turkeys as long as you can get her a close shot. I've been wanting to kill one with my old 16 gauge for a long time. I've just been having a hard time finding some good ammo.

Going to be hard to find a 'lite' #4.  A quality field load in a #6 is probably your best bet.  Would avoid the cheapo loads due to poorer shot and wad qualities.

Thanks. I'm going to load up a few rounds to try out this week. My little girl had fun at the NWTF today. She's taken a special interest in Turkey hunting lol. I love it

My best days were spent turkey hunting with my daughter. She was probably 11 here, she's 17 now.

I started her with heavy pheasant loads.
