Recommend some shooting drills for me

Recommended Posts

I'm not into competitive shooting so I normally just get a circular target and shoot from my normal two-handed grip. While reading an article, I came across this Wisconsin qualification course and realized that for self defense purposes, I should be doing something like this. I'd like to come up with a half dozen or so practical shooting drills. What would you recommend?

I really like this one. http://pistol-training.com/drills/dot-torture

You can print the target here. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=http://pistol-training.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/dot-torture-target.pdf&ved=0ahUKEwjWnuHzkdrKAhVB2mMKHelQBpsQFggbMAA&usg=AFQjCNFoKrsIpXJPlkRRsxcI7l5xNgEg3w

Start at 3yds. It's tougher than it looks and it will renforce good marksmanship while improving gun handling. If your range doesn't allow draw from a holster start from low ready

Use a random number generator to dictate how many times you shoot so you don't get conditioned to a specific amount.

Draw from your holster with your strong hand. Verbalize a predator statement like "Get the F$&@ away" or "Stand over there" in your most ruthless killer command voice of death and destruction you can muster. Do not verbalize a prey statement like "Stop". Focus on a firm grip prior to presentation. Use your other hand to hold whatever is commonly in your hands. For example your keys, cell phone, water bottle, wallet, groceries...etc. I've started using a small kettlebell to simulate my kid. Skin your smoke wagon and shoot from chest level to the ground. Scan WHILE moving to cover. Reload at cover. Reholster and assess for life threatening injuries.

Repeat the process with a threat from behind you.

Repeat the process after being struck to the ground and shoot from the ground.

Repeat the process in your car from both driver and passenger seat. Envision threats from each window.

After that you are mentally prepared to fire live ammo in similar scenarios designed around your range rules and capabilities.

I like to do the 5-5-5-5 drill. Five shots into a five-inch pie plate at five yards in five seconds. Start with gun holstered and have someone time you (approx) with an iPhone. Tougher than it sounds to hit all 5 on the plate. Great for 5-shot snubbies. B Edited by Bassoneer

+1 to Sidecarist.

Todd Green and pistol-forum have some great ideas and suggestions for various drills and practice sessions.

My personal favorite is simply a gunhandling drill and I find it pretty challenging myself.

It's the F.A.S.T. Test. Give it a try and let us know what you think.

If you have access to shooting steel me and a few likeminded guys practice shooting from the draw, shooting while strafing and while backpedaling.

Also dont buy into the hype of buzzers and battle belts...I usually carry how I would with a "NY tuck", an IWB or in my pocket with keys, phone, money

Practice shooting offhand and one handed.

Also the unorthodox firing positions like firing from sitting on your butt, leaning around a barrier or prone

It looks funky when youre shooting while in a crab walk but its real life stuff

Wish I had access to a place where I could do stuff like that.  It certainly sounds a lot more fun than perforating paper.

Paper is good for getting your fundamentals and target acquisition skills in order.

Steel/freestyle ranges are just for augmenting the skills you already have I like to say

Note: I'm quite skeptical that's actually a Wisconsin handgun carry qualifying test if that's what you mean -- where you find that?  Likely have any number of accidents if youir average joes were having to actually do that.

Hell, a Hunter Safety course qualifies up there.

I don't remember. I think it had something to do with LEO. It definitely wasn't an HCP class.  I just posted it so people could see what I was talking about.

I didn't like some of the drills, but it did trigger an idea to ask TGO to suggest some shooting drills.

Although... the drill to "load pistol with 3 rounds total (1 in chamber, 2 in mag). Take one side step to cover... and fire 4 rounds" gave me a chuckle.

I thought that too, but then realized -  1 in chamber, 2 in mag (in the gun) is how you start the drill - shoot 3 rounds (1 chambered, 2 in mag) then reload (fresh mag)

Here's one of my favorite drills I've started in the last year:

  1. Load one mag as full as you'd like.
  2. Load one round in a second mag.
  3. Insert the mag with one round and chamber that round (now you have one in the pipe and an empty mag in the gun).
  4. Put the full mag wherever you'd normally carry your spare.
  5. On the buzzer, draw and fire your single round, then reload with your full mag and fire a second round.

If you do it like this, you'll finish with a round in the chamber and you can put the full mag back wherever you carry your spare, put the empty mag back in the gun, and repeat the drill without a lot of set-up between runs. You can fire both shots on one target, fire one to the chest and the second to the head, or fire on two targets. You can also incorporate movement and verbal commands if you'd like. Recently I've started using balloons as targets to wrap up the session (more set-up between runs, but more fun and visual results). Here's my last run from a recent range trip:
