Pin & weld a Suppressor

This might seem a bit crazy to some, BUT

 

If one were brave enough to take a legally purchased suppressor and pin & weld it to a shorter than 16" barrel to make the OAL 16+ inches, would that not be the same as any other 'muzzle device'?

 

I really don't want to wait around for ANOTHER stamp for my 9mm AR build. Once completed I would have suppressed for good anyway and not remove it.  Despite my propensity for cast lead, i would even stay away from that and shoot only jacketed/plated loads so the need for disassembly would be rare, if ever.  

 

 

 

Just curious for opinions and thinking out loud.

I've always wondered about putting a slightly larger tube than the suppressor on the barrel and attaching it permanently. Then leave a threaded portion down in the bottom so you could still remove the suppressor but have a legal length barrel via the attached tube. Not sure if that's actually legal or not but I've wondered.

Tactical Solutions makes something exactly as you describe but of course they only deal with .22 caliber stuff. One design is a 12.25" barrel with a permantly attached shroud that extends measured barrel length to 16.5".

From the way I understand it, if you pin and weld a suppressor, you can avoid a SBR stamp but no way around a suppressor stamp.

Any muzzle device that the bullet travels through becomes part of the barrel if properly "permanently" attached, and hence also part of legal OAL.

Just make sure you don't create an SBR first then attach the suppressor.

I've been debating on doing this myself.  Looks like Griffin made a can to do just that.

In theory, what your saying makes sense. But over the past few months I have found that a call to the ATF office is worth the few day turn around for an answer. (I started emailing so I have proof)

Just ma lack of knowledge here, but what about cleaning with it permanently attached?

 

I like the idea as well Caster. My 9 pistol needs some help as well.

Over a thousand rounds through my 223 suppressor and it looks like it did after the first shot.

If I keep cast lead out of it, I doubt it'll ever get fouled enough to cause issues.

Right, as a rule, center fire rifle cans aren't made to be disassembled.
