motor in my lathe

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

Who uses the lathe? I create some parts with the machine. But on Monday the motor stopped. I suppose that the motor is burnt. I will be changing it to another model. If you have some experience with the motors, please recommend me any good/affordable model? American made..

Thanks

fixtmr8, if you are in Boston TN, Tenn Electric Motor is a good place to get your motor repaired.

Good company and good crew.

All that said, are you sure it is the motor?

Did the motor smoke any?

Did it get hot?

It could be a bad switch not sending power to the motor.

Yes, Thanks I will try to reach them after holidays.

The motor became hot and it had the smell, like the burnt rubber.

Let us know the year, make and model .. may can help point ya a little better.  I agree with all the post above. Would add if you have to replace the motor there's usually a compatible upgrade you can get to get more HP or spindle speed.  Best of luck

here is the model of my motor https://www.mrosupply.com/motors/ac-motors/general-purpose-motors/26523_vm3546_baldor/ I used it through the VFD.

The motor you reference is a 3 phase motor. It is important that all the nameplate data matches up for your replacement motor installation. The motor frame size is 56C which specifies the basic size and mounting configuration. Any other frame type will not mount up for you. There are simple electrical tests that can be performed to verify motor is bad. An ohmmeter can check the windings for continuity and balance. If there is a direct short to ground it could see that also. A 500v megger would be better for checking for grounded winding.

If the motor shorted out, it may have damaged the variable frequency drive (VFD). Good luck with that. Baldor motors are generally good motors and you most likely can replace this small 3 phase motor cheaper than rewinding it.
