Any marine mechanics?

I've done a bit with cars, trucks and Jeeps.... but I don't know much of anything about marine stuff. Got this boat from my buddy's dad a few months ago. It's an 87 model, so... but it's in excellent shape for the age and was a great deal.

Anyway, I do know that he had issues with it getting too hot and shutting down this past summer before I bought it from him. He said they had fixed it by putting in a new water pump. The original just plain wore out, and there was a sensor on the motor that if it got too hot, it shut down. And the old water pump just wasn't flowing enough water even though it was peeing just fine.

So I get out on the lake with my step dad the other day, and he notices it throwing water and exhaust out the front of the motor under the cowl. I took a quick video, but didn't have time to inspect it because my 4yo was on the boat and .... well...  any of you that have kids understand without further explanation.

Boat ran (and sounded) just fine, no issues. Was peeing just fine.

I'm thinking some sort of exhaust leak in the lower unit maybe?

Thoughts?

Check your powerhead (the actual motor block) and make sure it is securely mounted.  There four are usually four bolts holding it but I'm not familiar with that particular motor.  Looks like to me your powerhead is loose and you are loosing water in the gap there.  Hopefully a turn of the wrench will fix this.  If not you may need to remove the engine block and install a new gasket.  If that doesn't work you may have bigger problems.

Lets hope it is what 10-ring said.  I once bought a Toyota Forerunner that had over heated from what the seller said.  I thought maybe simple fix.  After many DIY many jobs to fix, I later discovered through the process of elimination, blown head gasket & cracked head.

The Video was pretty short so hard to actually get a real good idea. Let me ask you this. I'm sure the boat has a speedometer in it that is power driven by water pressure. If that hose has separated which it connects to the motor in that area it could be the issue and pumping water into cowling because it has come loose from the lower unit. Also if you have a water pressure gauge in the dash you also have a water line that runs pretty much in same location and if it has come loose from motor it can also allow water to come out of cowling. To have that much water coming from the engine block itself such as head gasket or cracked head or block motor would not run well at all. I always like to begin with the simple stuff first and that is the things I would look at first and go from there. Reason I say this is I have a Yamaha and I experienced both of those issues and they were simple to fix and cost about 5 bucks. If you can, take the boat down to a boat ramp and remove cowling and start motor and look for water leaks. Just back the boat far enough to get motor totally submerged. You should be able to do that without taking it off the trailer. Another way you can check it at home is to purchase a pair of Muffs that fit over water pick up on lower unit. Hook to hose pipe at house and remove cowling turn on water to muffs with cowling off start motor once you have water at lower unit and watch for water leaks from anywhere other than pee hole. If it is a water pressure gauge it should have a leak on the engine block at a water port and could be a broken rubber hose. If it is not actually leaking water into cowling but in the area in the video my guess is the Speedometer hose is leaking. The pick up for that is located in a small hole in the foot of the lower unit in front side. It will not leak while on muffs or on trailer because it requires pressure from lake water as you are moving forward. If you have any questions feel free to PM me and I will send you my phone number and you can call me..................
