New Marlin336 and reloading for 35 Rem

Recommended Posts

I picked up a Marlin 336 in 35 Rem for cheap (I'll post a pic soon). It has a fixed power Nikon Prostaff. The exterior shows quite a bit of wear. This gun has definately seen time in a pickup truck and/or a treestand. The action is smooth and the bore looks clean though. I'm hoping it's a good shooter. I actually like the worn finish because that means I can just enjoy hauling up a tree without babying it.

My question is about casting and reloading. I have discovered that factory ammo for this is more scarce than 22 was.

What's you favorite load for the 35 remington?

Which one of these two molds should I get?

I bought an RCBS mold several years ago.  Castings are air cooled wheel weights, sized .360", LAR's Carnuba Red lube.  Best groups arrived with 3031 powder, cast bullet groups rival jacketed bullet groups.  My tired old eyes benefit from a steel tube Weaver 4X scope with the heavy post,  just the ticket for a classic rifle firing a classic cartridge.  Haven't heard many reports about the Lee mold and but it looks good, as long as you can get it up to .360" as-cast to fill up your bore.  Marlin lever rifles are known to require a fatter bullet to generate tight groups.  Congrats on your finding a dandy for woods loafing, you should love it.

i am in the same boat.  i been researching load data for the 35 rem.  i have call several of the powder makers and talked with them on a reduced cast lead loads.  i got several starting points but not the time to load and chronograph them.   i am going to get a good 35 rem cast lead load for nra cowboy silhouette matches that will work out to 200 meters.  i am going to be working up some cast lead loads in february when i finish the 357 mag cowboy silhouette loads and the rechecking of my 44 mags cowboy silhouette loads.  if you are going to do hunting loads any book data loads will work.  i am going to use a .38 cal bullet around the 158 gr size pus with either sr4756, unigue, bullseye, mp5744, and/or titegroup.   brass is hard to find.  i had a guy in concho az make me 200 rounds of brass from 308 brass.  he makes a good product.  you can find factory ammo if you use one of the ammo search sites.

So you have no trouble getting .360 out of the RCBS? Do you have to size it down to that or the mold just gives it to you?
