anyone have any 1st hand experience with the CVA Scout rifles?  I've read most of the owner reviews at the retailer sites, and most seem favorable with the occasional "I got a bad gun" comments , and some other forum comments where available. Most comments seem favorable as well.   Looking at something somewhat inexpensive, light and compact for groundhog fun if I can line up some land owners to let me hunt 'em on their property.  I've never shot a 5.5 -6.5# scout rifle, mostly heavier varmit rigs so I'm looking at the .223 or maybe the .243.  I found one in a store and liked how it felt, seem to handle well and could shoulder it very easy and quickly, the camo stock did not do much for me but the pictures of the black and SS I've seen online look pretty good imo.

Hmmm.

Honestly, for a non-interchangeable barrel, break action, single shot, I'd look really hard at Rossi over CVA. On most of the Facebook gun pages, Gunbroker & Armslist, you could easily save a hundy.

Personally, at that price point, I'd be looking at the Savage Axis. Far better quality, outstanding accuracy, superb reliability & customer service & with savage's rebate program.....$250

I, at the advice of several friends with more knowledge on the subject than I, picked up a CVA since I was looking for a cheap deer rifle. I ended up getting a CVA Compact Hunter since I like a shorter length of pull anyway. I caught it on sale a Cabelas and they had their Big Buck Days going on which got me a gift card with the purchase. Without a doubt the best $160 I ever spent; I only wish they would have had the 7mm-08 in stock instead of the .243.

Next week I plan on having a close friend shoot it who is ten times the rifle marksman that I am. I shoot the CVA about as well as I shoot any other rifle. I am anxious to see how someone else is able to shoot it.

Since you asked about recoil, it recoils a little more than an AR, but not as much as I would have suspected. My old 30-30 Handi rifle without a doubt recoiled more, and I know my Ruger 44mag Carbine recoils more. Edited by Patton

I saw and briefly handled a Rossi at the same time/store, appearance did nothing for me, seemed on the ugly side IMO, both were hanging on the same wall stacked so an easy comparison.  The SS fluted barrel on the CVA caught my eye as well.

Having inter-changeable barrels is nice but not a necessity.  Have not looked at the Savage but lots of comments about being very accurate guns which is something I want.
