How Open is Open Carry

Since soon we will not be able to conceal carry in VA but can open carry, how open does it have to be. If I have a coat on does it have to be strapped around the outside of the coat?

 

I am going under the assumption that it I'm using an outside the waistband holster, that is open carry even if I have a coat or jacket covering it. True????

Nope. Seems to me the definition of the word "concealed" should make it rather simple to understand.

That would be a FALSE assumption..... If it were true you would have some folks trying to skirt the law and wearing trench coats in the summer.....

This may or may not answer your question but I ran across this trying to find what constitutes concealed carry in the Common Wealth of Virginia and thought it may be of interest.

Any of the enumerated weapons or any of like kind are at risk of being seized and forfeited if they are carried as described in the last sentence of the below Virginia Code.

Virginia Code Section 18.2-308 - Prohibits the carrying of any pistol, revolver, or other weapon designed or intended to propel a missile of any kind by action of an explosion of any combustible material; any dirk, bowie knife, switchblade knife, ballistic knife, machete, razor, slingshot, spring stick, metal knucks, or blackjack; any flailing instrument consisting of two or more rigid parts connected in such a manner as to allow them to swing freely, which may be known as a nun chahka, nun chuck, nunchaku, shuriken, or fighting chain; any disc, of whatever configuration, having at least two points or pointed blades which is designed to be thrown or propelled and which may be known as a throwing star or oriental dart; or any weapon of like kind by any person hidden from common observance about his person. Any of the enumerated weapons shall be seized and forfeited to the Commonwealth. A weapon shall be deemed to be hidden from common observation when it is observable but is of such deceptive appearance as to disguise the weapon's true nature.

I would hate to lose my sling shot by violating the concealed carry Code.

It's really not rocket science. Wear your gun in a OWB holster and don't cover it up with a coat. Wear a short jacket if you need a jacket and make sure to do the VA tuck.

You may not like it but that's gonna be your option until said time that the legislature can rein in the jackwagons.

Option B which I hate to bring up...  Pay the $100 and get a VA non-resident permit.  It appears as if you can do it completely online.

You can get a mid-ride or low-ride holster (not drop leg) or there are LE coats you can by that have a zipper opening for holsters.

Keep the outer coat open, have layers underneath it (I like a fleece vest personally) and wear the holster on the strong side front (2 o'clock-ish), or in a cross draw setup on the weak side at more than a 45° angle so the butt of the pistol is clearly visible.

What I find amusing is that most members of TGO like to take a big crap on anyone who carries openly. But now that this is the only way to carry legally in VA it seems to be suddenly acceptable.

Thanks for the clarification. My first option will be to stay out of VA as much as possible. After years of trying not to expose it will take some getting use to. Guess I will have to go shopping for a shorter coat or a longer holster :-)

 

Was interesting, went to Bristol TN on Wednesday and was thinking how one wrong turn could break the law and I get lost a lot.

 

I have a UT carry permit so as long as that is still acceptable to VA I guess I'm ok. I got it before my move to TN and was thinking I would let it lapse since TN covered more states than UT. I can't think of anything from the UT class that was not covered in the TN class accept they did not require live fire and they covered some UT specific laws.

Many years ago before concealed carry was where it is today Kentucky had a concealed weapon statue. I walked in a small store where everyone knew me with a 5 shot smith handle sticking out of my front overall pocket. So happened a State police whom I knew was standing and eating a sandwich and in between bites he said Mr.

(my Name) it's against the law to carry a concealed weapon in the state of Kentucky. My reply Mr. (his name) it's not concealed if you saw it.

There many be a few here that feel that way, but saying "most members of TGO like to take a big crap on anyone who carries openly." is pushing it a bit far. I could care less if you want to OC, it's up to you. What I've seen here is most don't agree with any one looking like Sgt. Rock when they do OC. Just my :2cents:
