Initially it was for self defense. The restaurant I worked at was robbed at gunpoint one night which really opened my eyes. Now I love shooting. I also want to be prepared for some sort of SHTF event.

The most obvious answer of course would be for defensive purposes. But I grew up in a rural area in the 50's and early 60's, so hunting was their primary use then.

I never thought to own one until I received some of my father's when he passed(I was 30 at the time). I have since started my own collection and got my permit 4 months after we said our goodbyes.

Like HP I voted for two reasons. First one was I grew up in a rural area and was raise hunting and fishing for the table to provide food. As I aged and and still hunted and fished I found it becoming more and more important for not only providing food but also protecting my family as the world was changing and with that I had to change also. Now I don't hunt and fish occasionally for the table which has many less mouths to feed My goal now is to protect my mutt and our lives and our food..............jmho

Mine was only for self defense and to protect family and others if need be. But now I enjoy the range. And being less than a 2 minute walk from the range got me hooked now!

I have self-defense as the primary reason, but I also very much enjoy shooting for my personal enjoyment.  My guns are bought with a combination of both in mind, but I don't have a gun I couldn't use in some self-defense scenario and doubt I'll ever buy one that couldn't fit a role for that need somewhere.
