Why is it that a space ship can sneak across the entire galaxy undetected, but when it flies over Billy Bob's bean field at night it has to turn on it's running lights?

The Simpson cartoon was not from 2000, but you all probably already know that.

Those are brake lights, in compliance with Intergalactic Code 1241.42.12533 Part AZ5 (Time and Space Traveling Pod Signaling Devices). In other words, they have no choice!

Really, if the episode is from 2000, then yes, that is hella freaky. Someone would have to show me the exact episode from 2000 though for me to believe it.

I would put $20 that it is recent and came out after the actual event.
