Not really related, I remember booming commerce & relations with The Gambia back when I started ham-radio.  There were dozens of C5 stations on the air chatting away every evening. Rare to hear anyone from the region anymore.

Jammeh has been tin-pot dictator since 1994.  I wonder what prompts him to do this? What are the dynamics?

His prompt is the support of 90%+ of the population which is muslim.

Yeah, looks like most of the Mandinka converted by ~1800. (So Gambia was islamic for a very long time before this)

 

But, a dictator does not just change his ways in the absence of profound fear, and most of the time not even then.

My guess is an a large Islamic nation or group influenced him with wine, non virgin women and BBQ ribs.
