Put up a "buster" sign of sorts, on my storm door.

It's for those pesky AT&T salespeople who just wont take "NO" for an answer, or no and go away. Really they are turning me off on AT&T by their strong arm sales tactics making me a lot less likely to think about ever going to them in the future no matter how mad I get with Comcast. I know it holds no weight like a No Trespassing sign but at least I can and will get nasty next time and ask if they are literate.

Most will ignore the sign because they won't know what the word means. Sorry, but it's the truth.

I'll have to "educate" them about what the sign means then. I've avoided being downright nasty with them however last time, and that was the 2nd time I did let them know I didn't appreciate them not respecting my hint that they leave. Next time if any will be the third strike, not going to stick my Stoeger side x side in their face and get arrested but my neighbor will probably hear some foul language and he lives about 200 yards from me.

I wouldn't do it but it's a fun day dream to show some pesky salesman the business end of a 12 gauge SxS. My go to gun is an 870 but I have always loved a cool SxS, 2 big cannons in your face has some psychological aspect to it, probably just a movie myth.

I get a few ever now and then. Something about some big dude with tats and beard opening a door and asking who the f*** they are what the f*** they want seems to turn them off to the idea. I'm very rude and gruff to people knocking on my door solicting. I've also had one show up at my parents when I was the only one there, working in the blacksmith shop. It was a Jehovahs witness. I told him he could talk all he wanted as long as he would come in the shop and swing a hammer while doing it cause I had shit to do. He declined my offer lol.

Just show up at the door in this costume and make bets to see which one gets to the car first. Then again, those AT&T salesmen will probably start bowing down to you.

This one has worked well so far lol. I think most people are more afraid of hard work than they would be of Satan

We get the AT&T guys too. When they first started Uverse in our area, the SAME 3 guys came to my door 3 times in one month. The first time I said no and sent them on their way. The second time I think I treated them like they were crazy because I had already sent them away once. The third time I showed my ugly side. They haven't come back :)

If I want ATT, I know where to find it. I don't need someone creeping up to my door.

The girl scouts might cry too easily though, so I just buy some thinmints and tagalongs ;)

I have the coonhound inside now, so he acts like he wants to run anyone knocking on the door up a tree, lol. A couple of salespeople have just turned and walked away recently when they hear what sounds like Kujo on the other side of the door.

The last time a Witness showed up we were headed to a 2nd Adm rally, yes 4 of us packing open, there eyes got as big as a plate.

I did ask if they wanted to go. None have been back.

If your knocking at my door selling something, your bothering me, so I don't have to be "nice".

My current trend for dealing with solicitors is to open the door, immediately say "Not interested" and immediately shut and lock the door and walk away. Seems to work pretty well - no one has tried knocking a second time.

AT&T pestered me non-stop when U-verse was first available in my neighborhood. One of the five times they came by, I was fueling up my mower and they wanted to chat. Told them I wasn't interested and kept prepping the mower. They were still talking when I fired up the mower and started cutting the lawn. The look on their faces was priceless.

I love were I live. My home cannot be seen from the street so they don't even know I am back here. I do have one of these on my door which seems to even bother a few people that stop in with buddies of mine that don't know me personally.

My daughter was dating a guy that I wasn't too impressed with and one similar to this is what he saw every time he walked in the door. It stayed there until he decided to move on to someone else.

BTW, she later thanked me.

Yes they are irritating.  Getting nasty or responding with anger is a really bad idea.  Here is how to handle them and why this way is best.

When they come to the door and start talking.  I wait until they take a breath or interrupt if they don't take one.  In a courteous, yet firm way, I say, "I know you have a tough job, though I'm simply not interested."

They will immediately ask a question or start talking.  This is what they are trained to do - if they can get you to engage in a conversation the chances of making a sale increase greatly.

When they do that, I say, "Again, I understand that you have a tough job, but I'm not interested and am about to close the door."  I then close the door.

Two keys:  Don't get nasty or treat them poorly.  and....don't engage.  Engaging in any way is where they wind up making you mad.

Why is this the best way to handle this?:

  • Many of these folks are two steps away from public assistance and they are working.  No one that can get a better job takes door to door sales.  None of us want to spend tax dollars to support folks and these folks are at least trying.
  • Many of these folks, especially the ones selling magazines or asking for money for non profits, have a history with the law.  Violence is not very far below the surface.
  • We all are prepared to defend ourselves and our homes.  Having said that, allowing a situation to escalate, which is what the anger and nasty behavior does, is simply not smart.

Again, they key is to be courteous and firm and DON'T ENGAGE with them.

Didn't Obama say something like that at his last press conference?  :ugh:

Sorry Pete123, I couldn't help myself

That's actually pretty funny.  What's up with him and his inability to engage Isis in a meaningful manner.  He has found himself my least favorite of the modern presidents.

He's not any better than Jimmy Carter was with the Iranians.

Also, I totally get your frustration with the door to door sales people.

I find they work quite well also. I have about 10 of them on different walls and doors around my place. When folks that have not been here before ask me about them I tell that that as my aim improves I replace old ones with new ones. They just get this blank kind of stare and change subjects. A few of my friends will warn someone that has never been to my house that I have strange ideas when it comes to decor so just try to ignore it............

Most times, unless I'm expecting a package I don't answer a knock at the door.  When I do answer, and the person isn't wearing a UPS/FedEx/USPS uniform, I simply say "No thanks, not interested" and close the door.

Actually, no.

Sorry, here is the only place I could find the quote. But he said it.

I've always had the best results while being kind.

As a matter of fact, we decided to switch to U-Verse because a door to door salesman told us about it. Didn't actually buy it from him, but I listened to what he was trained to say and didn't insult or denigrate him or his mother. After all, he has a job and is trying. Edited by Clod Stomper

They always seemed to come by where I used to live about the time my promotional internet deal was ending. Whether it be Comcast or u verse. So I usually let them in and told them if they could match or beat my current promotion they could have my business. It worked in my favor every time, and I never had to leave the house.

The Jehovah's witness and window, door, etc...just a simple not interested and close the door worked fine. Edited by blewbayou

I thought you lived in the boonies right? Can't imagine there's a lot of solicitation.

Regardless you're probably right :D

I do. I live on a one lane deaden back road. It not even wide enou gh for two trucks to pass and I'm the second to last house. And still they wander out here 3 to 4 times a year. My parents live way out. Between Briceville and New River which are both known as rough neighborhoods to unfamiliar faces and were pretty wild just a few years ago. It's a 30 min drive from the nearest gas station, up a very curvy mountain road, then out a single lane dead end road, and up a 1/4 mile long driveway. There's only a JW or salemans that wanders up that way every couple years.

Years ago, I knew a guy that would keep a porno tape at the ready. Whenever a solicitor came to the door, he'd pop in the tape, answer the door and invite them in. Most of the time they would not be able to concentrate and do their spiel, and just leave all offended. He told the story of one church lady that persevered all the way through.

I've though a little more about this since my response from yesterday.  One of my many frustrations with Obama, which I referenced below, is his handling of Isis.  Playing nice with them simply won't work.

Door to door sales people are a totally different kettle of fish.  These are folks who are just trying to make a living.  That doesn't mean that they aren't irritating.  Courteous, Respectful behavior toward others almost always makes sense.  Courteous and respectful doesn't mean being a doormat and letting them run over you.

Good examples of this in my life have been when I've received speeding tickets.   I try to talk my way out of it.  The officer has been courteous and respectful as he continues filling out the ticket and handing it to me.  Though I don't like it, he's doing his job.

Sales people are doing their jobs.  The majority of us in the private sector work for companies that have sales people who are the ones that generate the business that allows for others to have jobs.

Private citizens can sign up for the 'do not call' list to reduce the amount of sales calls they receive.  There isn't anything like that for the business world, nor has there ever been discussion of it that I'm aware of.  Why?  Companies don't want their sales people being shut down.

That's actually pretty funny.  What's up with him and his inability to engage Isis in a meaningful manner.  He has found himself my least favorite of the modern presidents.

He's not any better than Jimmy Carter was with the Iranians.

Hookers are the only people that actually will understand the word. So, yes the sign will keep hookers away!
