Hey new here....

After a  recent  death experience... I have caught the gun bug....  for me and Mrs....

want her to be able to protect herself if I were to die again and not be savable....

looking at 9mm CCW  the usual suspects,, glock, M&P, springfield....

just seems the Springfield is the one I keep coming back to based on all the  online reviews and vids and see women shooting them online too..

Just looking for  input...

I cannot find one to shoot pre--purchase... so will have to  base it on  the  non mod .2 rentals I could find

just a noob  looking for  opinions.....

we plan on taking CC PERMIT CLASS TOGETHER and probably the more advanced classes too as I want her to be  super confident in her gun abilities...

thanks in advance

Friend of mine just got a 4" version.  Darn sweet pistol.  I've always thought the ergonomics in the XD  series was great.

I'd think that a better place for this question would be in the women's forum for more female visibility/feedback, but having just taken my sisters out shopping for new pistols I'd say it's more about the individual feel of the gun in their hands when they are beginners. I took my sisters out to shoot 9mm and .40 in small pistol sizes so that they could judge the round before the touchy-feely stuff. When I took them to the gun stores they were more into the feel and weight of the weapon in their hands more than anything else. They each ended up getting Ruger LC9's because of the aforementioned and because the frames were colored purple and raspberry.

I don't think an XD is a good choice for concealed carry for most females. I carry the exact gun you're looking at, though not the Mod 2 version (very little difference in size, etc.) but it's bulky. Females are going to carry only if it's slimmer, generally speaking. The Sig P232, LC9 (as stated above), possibly the CZ 75 Compact, something like that would be where I would look for your better half. The S&W M&P is also a little slimmer, I believe, and the lower bore axis will probably make it more pleasant to shoot. That's why I'm considering an M&P vs. CZ 75 Compact myself right now.

If you want to try out an XD at the range, let me know and we can probably work something out. If you want to try out just about any other gun you can think of, either I or somebody on here probably knows someone that has one that would be willing to let you put a few rounds downrange. I mean, who doesn't need another excuse to get to the range, right?

We've shot them all... just gave my wifey another Shield (I already have one for myself) today for an early Christmas present. She likes the slimmer singlestack of the Shield and it's comfy shootability. I don't disagree and figured it'd be nice that we both had the same carry pistol. Now I have a bunch of Shield mags, lol!

The value proposition of the Shield vs the XDs or XDM2 is nothing to be sneezed at, either. In the XDs favor, I believe there's some factory promo for free extra mags and case or something via mail-in certificate with purchase right now.

My wife's favorite gun is her XDm9c ... She absolutely loves it.

With that said ~ I could never imagine her carrying it, and she is a relatively tall girl at 5'9"

We have an Pink LCP and Shield in 9mm for her carry duties :)

I have orginal XD Subcompact 9 and love it. It is rather chunky but carried IWB is quite comfy. Shoots as accurately as my XD Service, too. It's sort of voodoo how it holds 13+1.

Carried it IWB for good while, but admit I've been carrying a Kahr in the pocket for much longer due to having to be more discreet dressing at the Y and whatnot. But I'm thinking seriously about going back to it on non-Y days, I sure miss the comforting thought  of the extra rounds, plus can tote a 16 round backup.

I guess the new version is nice, but the original Service and Subbie are a steal at ~$400 for the Essentials version that just has two mags with it.

Here's the promo, 2 more mags, carrier, and dual pistol range bag for any Springfield pistol bought by Dec. 31st.

Thanks this is all great info !!

Today I shot the Glock 19  its bigger than a 3" XD  and I really liked it ( not a horrible recoil at all)

also shot the 3" M&P  (much more recoil)   Makes me think I need to forget the 3" XD and find a 4" XD to try.

I got lucky at the range as  they let me  shoot a sig too  (and didn't charge me but I liked this gun the least==== and it showed on the target)

Also a retired guy was there who is buddies with the employees,  and he taught me how to load and shoot and let me try his XD subcompact 40 ( seemed like more recoil than the M&P and felt too small in my hands)

Definitely need MRS. to shoot some rentals too...  but she just had a big surgery so it will be a few weeks.....

will see if she likes the smaller ruger or shield... but being told the RECOIL is HARSH on the tiny form factor guns... yes ??? no???

was hoping to make it  2 matching XD Mod 2's     at least want to keep it all 9MM

this is  a lot harder than I thought it would be

I've handled the XD Mod 2 as well as the XD Subcompact 9 OS refers to and both are a bit bulker to me then a Glock 19 and FWIW the G-19 is also bulky. Insofar as overall comfort and less bulk I much prefer the XDs 9 for daily carry, mine has the 3.3" barrel. I plan to purchase a G-43 in the near future but am also seriously considering an XDs 45 with the four inch barrel.. The most comfortable higher capacity 9mmP pistol I've carried to date has been a box stock Browning High Power.

I found out today that Nashville armory has the 3"  XD mod 2 9MM in the rental fleet... so that will help.. but no 4"

they suggested I get the private training together with my wife... 2 hrs $165    1 hr.. classroom  and 1 hour on the range shooting the contenders that we might choose and based on feedback  instructor will suggest guns to try so we can pick the right one  ... so would just cost  $165 for the class and pay for Ammo

I figure I will lose that much $$$ or more in " trade- in" if we hate  the guns we buy without being sure

but still need carry class and all that expense , ammo,   and figure  in... range membership the cheapest way to go rather than pay each time

Some of the smaller guns that have harsh perceived recoil can be tamed with some rubber grips. Case in point: My wife's Sig P232. The grips are hard plastic, so shooting even .380 has uncomfortable. Added some Hogue rubber grips ($18) and voila, a joy to shoot now.

But yea, finding the right gun can be a chore. But once you've found it! I no longer own a gun I don't love to shoot. Aside from their obvious practical use, guns should be fun. When they are, you'll practice, become comfortable, carry them, etc. Plus, they're not exactly cheap from most people's perspective, so taking the time to find the right is to your advantage.

Hope your wife gets back to 100% quickly.
