Recommend to me an AR that meets this criteria

A buddy of mine wants an AR. He won't shoot it a lot nor clean it religiously. He's not going to hunt or shoot it anything other than relatively close range paper targets. He wants it to "look good." Upon questioning a bit, I gather this means quad rail, FDE or similar color, optics, bipod front grip, and so on.

 

What should he get as the AR and where should he look to order the accessories?

Rifle or pistol?

AR pistols are a lot of fun. Great at closer ranges. Less weight and easier to carry.

What's the budget?

FDE accessories aren't a problem but the receivers being FDE certainly cuts down on options unless he would be willing to have it coated after purchase.

...then tell him if he wants it to shoot well, "cleaning it religiously" shouldn't be looked at as a negative.  Direct gas AR's are his price range, and they get dirty.  He'll have to deal with it.

That's a pretty good idea.  If he wants to tacticool it up a notch for aesthetic value, plenty of products available from the usual suspects.

Ditto. My other favorite source is primaryarms.com I've finished my last two builds with stuff from them. PSA mostly carries their own line of stuff. Nothing wrong with that, but not the greatest variety. Primaryarms.com has tons of stuff, from basic to crazy expensive. Lots of neat dress up/customizable bits that PSA just doesn't fool with. Also, I find their shipping charges more reasonable, and I've received every order exactly two business days after placing it. That NEVER happens with PSA! Ha!

+1 to Primary Arms. They had a 10.5" AR pistol up during Cyber Week for just north of $450 IIRC. Pretty sure it had quad rails.

 

Their Primary Arms branded optics are decent quality and a great value for the price even if they do tend towards the heavy side compared to the high end stuff like Aimpoint and Eotech.
