That's one of the reasons I dig milsurps so much. There's a lot of neat history behind the manufacturing.

What a manufacturing country we used to have: when makers of juke boxes, typewriters, postal meters, and auto steering components could tool up and make quality rifles in short order!

A friend of mine has a bubba'ed up mosin made by Remington that is sitting in a safe with him trying to figure out what to do with it. No it is not for sale, already made offer, he is either going to scrounge parts and try and get back to original configuration or arch-angel it he hasn't decided due to the fact that you don't see a lot of them around. The problem is the front sight has been cut off and he is not sure if he wants to go thru the trouble of repairing( he is capable) but very time consuming.

You just hit on the fascinating history of M1 Carbines!

I seriously doubt American manufacturing could be so utilized and tooled-up so quickly in this day and age.

We'd first have to clear it with the foreign companies that own a significant portion of manufacturing facilities in the US.
